Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

fly14,

Thanks for putting up little HydeLowRider and myself a couple of weeks ago at your cabin.

My experience on the Mainstem during the fall typically involved fishing Pseudos in 18-20's during overcast weather. I have typically scored on rising browns while looking for heads off of the bank anywhere from 6" to 30 feet, etc.

The foliage and wildlife is incredible -- worth the price of admission by itself -- bears, and aggressive deer that will snort at you while you are anchored out and fishing risers from the boat.

I think the fall is a great time for a good size trout on the main stem and the rest of the system; one, the levels are usually wadeable (hopefully this rain pattern will break up). Another thing is the crowds are gone, only the crazies like us continue. I'll usually either nymph or search with Iso compara dun, most if any hatches will be in afternoon, sometimes will get 18/20 BWO's/Baetis coming off. Watch your closing regs on the Delawares different sections close at different dates. November I switch over to the Esopus which stays open until Nov 15 I think. By then I'll shut down for the winter.

thanks for the help guys and hyde no problem you are welcome their anytime, maybe if our timing works out we can hit the main in the fall togeather. Amazing things can happen on the delaware and its tribs in the fall. Ive seen fish of incredible size and im sure alot of others on this board have too. The key is fish big and you cant expect alot of hits but when you get one count on it being big. I know olives are out and midges but at that time of year id much rather take my chances goin for a big fish. Keep fishin

Fall usually is the most consistant time to be on the D.

The large fish will gorge themselves on Pseudos size 20-26 and
Ephemerella Lata (small olives) 22/24.

Also look for October Caddis size 12/14.

Fly this activity is very consistant even on bright sunny days since its the water temps that trigger the Olives.

Fyi-Weather permitting I have had PSUEDO activity into December.

Say Hi to your dad for me.

Fly, maybe Joe or the others might know better than me, actually not maybe, i'm sure they would but, Basket Creek is one of my favorite places in the spring for spawning rainbows, so maybe it is the same in the fall for browns. I've only fished it in the spring, but a spawning trib. is a spawning trib. It's very easy to access. Drop over to Joe McFadden's fly shop in Hankins and he'll direct you to it. No need to put the exact directions here and have everyone show up on the same weekend. The trick is to get there before they are actually on reds, (beds), so that you don't disturbe the spawning process, and tromp all over the eggs. You wanna get em' when they are just off the mouth staging, or just starting up the trib. Good luck. mark (willow) p.s. sometimes Joe has incredable deals on Winston rods.
