RE: Fly Fishing info for Ocean Grove

I am going to be in Ocean Grove in 2 weeks and wanted to know what my options are for doing a little saltwater fly fishing...I have been fly fishing for a few years but have limited salt water experience so all the info I can get would be great....( ie - flies, rod size, places to fish, shop info in the area, line info, etc) Thanks in advance for the help.

hmmm, you may want to post this on other nj boards under the fly fishing section. Something like njstriper.com or stripersurf.com

another possibility is calling one of the fly shops, like The Fly Hatch in Shrewsbury, although honestly it depends on who you talk with about what kind of info you'll get.

My general guess is that folks are fishing for fluke with bait. On the fly I think they're getting the occasional bluefish right now.

I did read that there was a blitz last week North of Monmouth Beach, but that is not consistent (never is but especially at this time of year).

During the day there will probably be too many folks on the beach to do much flyrodding, but in the evening or early morning you might do ok.

In general, first light is best.

As to size of tackle, Intermediate sink, 8wt or higher. SW Clousers and deceivers, squid flies, callico crab flies, in white, olive/white, blue/white, crab colors (big grin) should do it.

I hear that rainfish and shiners are around the beaches so slim profile flies should be a first resort.

[DISCLAIMER: I haven't been out in the salt fly fishing yet this year...so get advice from those who have. I'm just echoing what I've read lately]

To me, another who hasn't been in the salt yet this year Robs advice sounds right.....there is another fly shop in point pleasent, I don't really know where Ocean Grove is . Since moving to the mountains 2 yrs ago my "shore knowledge" has been limited.

I believe the name of the shop in Pt Pleasant is 'down and trout' or some such thing and I'm sure they're listed in the phone book.

To survive they have to have sw knowledge as well down there so give them a shot.

JUST REMEMBERED: If you have a car (which I assume you will), then you'll want to hit the 8th Ave Jetty in Asbury Park which is right next to Ocean Grove. It's on the North border of Asbury Park with Deal, and if you head up 35 and then head to the beach near "ta da" 8th Ave. (or 7th or 6th...there are some high rises and it's adjacent to Deal Lake so you can't miss it) then there is a nice jetty that you'll share with a lot of fishermen but can at times do really well. There are other jetties adjacent to there as well and you can fish the beach in the pockets depending on the crowd. As long as there is no blitz on there should't be too many guys there.

From South to North the towns go:
Ocean Grove, Asbury Park, Deal.

If you're not local then understand that Asbury Park is *not* a pretty town. 'bout as ugly as Ocean Grove is pretty if you get my drift.

But I've been to the jetties near deal a few times and you'll be ok there.

For general conditions Betty and Nicks in Seaside has a decent site, although they specialize in IBSP.

Hmmm, can't think of the shops closer to Ocean Grove, although i'm sure someone there has a web site...

[brain hasn't returned from AK yet...]

Another choice from Ocean Grove is to go south (probably 10 miles) to the Shark River inlet near Belmar. Again very early morning or very late evening is the ticket hear as the beach crowds will be BAD. But there are 2 jetties that are ok for fly rodding depending on the wind. The north jetty is a bit closer to the water so would be my choice. Less climbing involved. WATCH OUT if you are on the rocks. Without cleats (corkers) DON'T step on wet (dark or green) rocks.
