beach snook.jpg

Snook Fishing from the beach in SE Florida is on right now! Intemediate line any olive n white or yellow and white or tan and white superhair fly will work; leader 6 to 9 ' 40# butt, to 30 to 20 to 15, 30 floro foro shock you need that , last 2 hours of the ebb to the 1st 2hrs on the incoming. walk the beach looking for bait or sight cast to the fish you'll see em they r in close. You can use a 9' 8 9 or 10 wt, I prefer a 9 or 10 in case of wind, 8 is all you really some of the fish r pushing 20 lbs. should be good right thru the month and into sept. you do need a liciense and and the season is closed . u are allowed to catch and release. nice thing is no one is fishing.

Yea man I heard shit has been pretty wild down there.

I just tried my hand at stalking snook from the beach a couple weeks ago. Now I'm totally hooked. When you see giant females and the packs of males cruising around its really gets your blood pumping. I spent a few days on the beach and on some days saw at least 100 fish. Getting takes was pretty tough though...There was cold water getting mixed in which could have had something to do with it. I was able locate fish, cast to them, get them to follow...but getting takes was tough. I only managed to land one. I felt like I should have done better, but the locals I talked told me the same.

The latest word I got is that shit has gone completely bonkers. Bait has been packed tight to the beaches. Snook fishing has kinda sucked because there are a lot of sharks around. On the other hand large tarpon aren't afraid and they're all over the beach as well.

I'm working on scraping up a plane ticket for the end of the month, trying to catch it just before the next moon...

I'll be mostly between West Palm and Stuart from the 20th to 25th of this month. Might be tricky to get my fly rod there. I used to just keep a 9 weight stashed down there when my inlaws had a place. Would WB to Stuart be in the hot zone?

You're in the taint my man...

I'm trying to get down around the same time...If so maybe we can link up.

I hear you on keeping a rod down there...I couldn't get my pops on the program and he flew the coup (snowbirds) with it, although I know damn well he won't be using it
I took my 8 wt down, which would have been ok if I had the right lines for it...tried my 10 wt intermediate line but it required a lot of extra hauling since the rod couldn't shoot it fast enough...then I ended up snapping the tip off when I was getting back into the car...

Let me know if you book those dates, and we'll see if we can work out some fishing time, or at least let each other know what's working and where.

So how do people get rods on trips like this?

When I head out west, I usually get a guide who works out of a shop for 1 day, and I UPS all of my equipment to the fly shop. I get a lot of mixed messages from the airlines, so I've always avoided the hassle of going through the inspections or checking my stuff in baggage (which I don't completely trust).

What are people's experiences trying to bring a rod as carry-on? How about a reel with fly line? My rod tube is 39 inches. Obviously, I can't carry through flies, scissors, or other sharp objects.

Hey there I'm still trying to figure this out. Looks like if I can go it will be around the weekend of the 25th...

You will be limited with carry on...you can probably get a reel and I've heard of people getting flies through but I'd say thats risky. Either way you'll have to check the rod or send it.
As I'm looking at flight...I'm now considering southwest...They're a little more expensive but they let you check 2 bags for free which could make up the difference of checking or sending...
Still trying to figure this out...time is running out, so I should know soon

I am heading out west in September...First time......I was told to pack all my fishing stuffs in a box and UPS it, flies, rods, reels, vice, materials, waders and the such....This is because someone I know checked these things and ended up with empty rod tubes when they arrived...also it apparently is a hassle getting through security, these TSA agents probably have never seen a fly or a fly rod and may think it is some new plot.....

Good idea, When I went to Montana years ago had to switch flight in Minnesota. I went to Boseman and my waders went
to Denver. Luckily the airline got them to me the next day, they flew them to Boseman and drove them to West Yellowstone. Bob Jacklin loaned me a pair from his flyshop till they arrived.

Absolutely UPS it. Like I said, I don't trust the check-in process with my rods and reels. Never had a problem with UPS, and the return box gets a few items that I can't carry on the plane as well. My first trip out west was in August, 2001. Took everything through the screening in Newark, including a fly tying kit with my pedestal base vice. They stopped my bag after the x-ray and had me take out the vice. Pretty funny explaining what a fly tying vice is to the screeners at EWR. They let it go through. A month later, that wasn't going to happen anymore.

Enjoy the trip.

Definitely UPS your gear there. ITs a guaranty it will be there. The airlines now charge for baggage. and the bags don't always arrive on the same flight. Never lost anything just the hassle inconvenience and time of going back to the airport to pick up a missing bag or rod tube...it cost the same to ship it ground ups ,,,,u can insure it,,, tkes 3 days to get there so plan in advance ie EWR to PBI
