Soft Hackle Flies

Is there a particular reason why Soft Hackle/Spider patterns don't get as much lens time as the wets or salmon/steelhead flies?? Just curious. I happen to love them. I think it more has to do with the "minimal" aspect of them, especially the Scottish Spider patterns. Dunno.

Speaking of Soft Hackles/Spiders....

I know there's quite a bit of Sylvester Nemes books out there. Any of his books you'd recommend over another? Are there any others from other authors to look for?

Has anyone checked out the Nemes DVD Sylvester Nemes' Softhackles: The Life, Times, and Flies of a Remarkable Man??

Worth a buy?

Thanks.

There is a gentleman who goes by Softhackle on this site his name is Mark. He ties superb soft hackle flys I hope he checks in and gives you his take on the subject. I am familiar with the books you are looking at and they are good to have if you are going to tye these .Look up Hans Weilenmann to he is well versed in tying these patterns , his website has a wealth of information as well. You can look at some of his flys here http://www.danica.com/FLYTIER/ :)

Read The Art of Fishing The Wet Fly & Fishing The Flymph by James E. Leisenring and Vernon S. (Pete) Hidy. If you like doing research and want to go way back in history, get a copy of North Country Flies by Pritt and Brook and River Trouting by Edmonds & Lee. Nemes wrote extensively about the soft hackled fly (I own four volumes) and I suspect you will probably get all you need to know from his books.
