Split Estate

So has anyone seen the fracking documentary "Split Estate?" I caught a few minutes of it this morning and it looked interesting. It's basically about a community in Colorado that has allegedly suffered pretty serious health issues and they blame fracking.

Now it was on Planet Green and I did not see the whole thing. I am betting many will question the science and how the movie is playing to emotions and what not. It was clear however that the people who were affected are those who also stood the most to gain from royalty payment.

The burning glass of well water was pretty interesting. If you don't believe fracking caused those problems, remember nobody has PROVED cigarettes cause cancer either.

If I was a real stake holder in this issue in the Catskills, I would watch the movie and I would ingest some industry propaganda and try to draw my own conclusion.

These people were not the mineral owners they were surface owners and as such do not receive royalties.

The bases for the show is that out west the government and other indiviguals/companies own the mineral rights and the surface owners are at odds with them.

I just wonder why they didn't interview anyone who was satisfied with the way the surface owners and mineral rights owners worked out drilling arrangements. I'm sure their must be a couple of thousand who are not complaining.

I also like how they interviewed Theo Corbun (sp??). She said that the one women came to her with a rare endocine cancer and that she had heard others had problems as well but didn't say she saw them as patients or even interviewed them.

It may have held more weight if they had been a bit more unbias although I know the surface owners out west should be treated better, better regulations for protections.

Almost all land in NY and PA that lies in the Marcellus have not had their estate severed, they are leasing. PA actually has three estates, surface, mineral(includes coal) and gas & oil, NY only two, surface and mineral.

As far as lighting your tap, it's more common in the Catskills and Poconos then you think and without any gas drilling nearby, we're talking 25+ miles to the nearest one. Sulfur in your water(rotten egg smell), you have methane.

Yeah I was wrong with the conclusion about those land owners making any money. For what happened in their backyard, it's too bad they got nothing but rare forms of cancer.

Either way, there are some images that would give me pause before letting anyone frack in my back yard. I'd at least make sure I made enough dough to move to nicer place.
