attaching cork handle to bamboor rod blank

brianj434

Fishizzle, I use worms but I'm looking to upgrade!
this is for anyone who has built a bamboo rod.
I have made several rod blanks and i am now ready to attach the handles, the cork rings have round holes and my balnk is hexagonal and tapered where the handle is, should i cut my own cork with hexagonal holes or force the rings down onto it, any tips about any stage of the building after assebly of the blank will be appreciated.

:)i make my own cork email me with my lathe and a mandrel usally a1/4 inch the i ream the cork out to the id of my blank, after i have turned it round, hope this makes since to you, if you need further ins. please email me in peace yellowhammer

I would defer this question to Ronbo. I know he has friends that do bamboo. I think he may know as well too.

Hey Brian,
I basicly do the same as yellow hammer.
I ream out the cork grip after I have glued and shaped the cork.
I use a tapered rat tail file and just ream enough to be able to slid the grip down the blank and fit snugly. the glue takes up any excess space between the round hole of the grip and the hex shaft.
Here's one I did on a quad that needed every ring reamed square and glued on indivigualy. It was a pain but made for a nice effect with the spacing.
good luck.
Ron
