Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

labor day 2003 striper

Well, It's not big, but it was my first striper on the fly of the year.
Caught 1:30AM sunday of the labor day weekend.

Caught on a 9 wt with a black deceiver in the surf near
a super secret jetty in South Jersey.

This was measured 23" with a *tape measure* brought
with me, thank you :)

Looks like a nice one to me, I sure would be glad to play with something that powerful on the end of my rod.

1:30 in the morning??? I know how much I stumble around in the day time or at duck. I am sure I would be breaking rods and tripping over all kinds of stuff at 1:30 in the morning.

jcw, actually you'd be surprised how much light there really is at night, especially along the new jersey shore. But also remember that when fishing from a beach there is typically fewer things to worry about except for breaking surf!! This particular shot wasn't my most graceful catch and release excercise, but I was watching out for breakers while fumbling for the camera. I had to take a picture to prove to my wife that I actually *catch* something :)

Joe, I thought you'd get a kick out of that measurement. Actually if you notice, he was pretty fat, and I thought he was actually much bigger just based on how much line he stripped out on me. The surf really adds power to these fish, and being at night doesn't hurt either: everything feels bigger.

Nice fish Rob... However, when is this site going to stop reffering to fish which are clearly only 19 inches as being larger than 20 inches? This is obviously a smaller fish. Anyone can see that! Geeze. :}

I need to get out with you at the hook someday.

Fred,

Been really busy on and off, weekends especially, but now isn't a bad time to head out.

Fish are in and out. Right now it's early and late: blues in toward the daylight hours and bass closer to the dark hours. You have to hunt around for bait, bait eaters, fish eaters (like fishermen), as the pods of bait and predators move around, but they're in.

During the mid-day the fish move off shore more leaving them to the boats,
although this may change in the next week or so. From what I've heard, nights have been a slow pick, mostly by bait guys.

Plug guys are doing well, and when they're right in the wash, the fly guys do as good or better.

Flyin' that's exciting stuff. Do you guide? I'd really like to try it sometime. I did try it once off some beach in Brooklyn, but we had no luck. I've got the flies, the rod, etc. but no knowledge of where and when to go. Always heard Oct. was "The" month for it though. Nice goin'. mark

Mark....head down to Island beach state park....it's easy to get to and the action will likely start to pick up soon as flyin stated....If you have a truck and wish to purchase the 3 day beach buggy permit it's a blast....since I believe now all the bathing beaches are open you can pretty much go where you like(there are closed ares).....anyway if you strike out in the suds gotto the bay side of the park and try your luck there, there is a fishermans walkway that takes you right out to the bay.....If you are going to try this let me know...make a post here my e-mail is screwed up...there is a list of things you NEED to have before they let you onto the beach and your vehicle must be 4x4 and have no fliud leaks...They will check...Well good luck....oh yeah....if you're only going for the day you can still get good beach access in the town of Seaside Park....I think it's like 12.00 for the season as apposed tolike 35 for 3 days in the state park.......

Mark,

I'm still learning this stuff big time. Maybe I can guide a few years from now :)

I had my best and worst day on Friday. Best for finding fish, worst for losing them and not having enough time to pursue further!

But as njflyguy said IBSP will be great soon, even without the beach pass, you can drive down to the end, park and take the long walk to the jetty, from there you have access to the ocean, inlet or bay, depending on the tide and wind.

For the hook, there are spots on the bay, tip and ocean side. Right now, it's look for the bait and then fish. Flyfishing can be tricky due to surf and wind conditions.

Haven't had too much success at night up here (yet). That fish was caught south of Atlantic City...

Thankx for the tips guys. I'm wondering if i'll actually be able to make it until next year though. I have animals here that need constant daily attention and then i need to get flies done for about three different swaps i'm in right now. I guess i didn't realize ("that fish was caught south of Atlantic City") it was so far south of here. It would take me four hours plus just to get there, unless i left from my apartment in N.Y.C. Now that the clocks have changed it just gets dark to early. By the way, when is the weakfish run? I've heard they are a good little game fish also. They are around in the spring right? Damm, i wish they would leave daylight savings time all year round. Well, look for me at the CFTG table in the hallway at the I.F.T.S. in Somerset, on Sun. Nov. 23rd. I'm scheduled to tye from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. mark

Mark, I know there's plenty of nighttime flyfishing on the hook, which would be significantly closer for you. It's just that *I* been successful yet. From what I understand, except for those times when fish are blitzing late in the day, which can run through the early night, that in general midnight to first light are the better hours of nighttime fishing.
Of course, exceptions are possible.
I can tell you the best shot at a guide, though. If you give a shout out on the flyfishing forum of stripersurf.com for a fellow named superfly , he would almost certainly offer to take you out there and show the ropes as he's made that offer to several folks (myself included, though I haven't been able to take him up on it) already. superfly fishes the hook at night almost exclusively for years, and he's the moderator for that forum on the board.

I'm also told that the big stripers come around in November :)
