Looking for a GOOD line

To all/any that can help-

I am looking for a good floating 9 wt line for my saltwater set up. Does anyone have any advice as to what lines to stay away from or try? I know that most, if not, all lines have some memory, so I was wondering if anyone has had any REALLY bad experiences with particular makes and models of lines. I am leaning toward a Monic clear floating, but I'm not sure yet. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Oh, and already have an intermediate line for most of my Jersey fishing. This floating line will be for Martha's Vineyard. Thanks in advance-

Jon

I would not go with a clear line for my floater. If your fishing for stripers, ie dawn, dusk and plain old middle of the night, I like to be able to see the line out there. Better to mend and control.

If your in the waves at all your going to want to see it

Just my $.02

Floating lines for Stripers are mainly used for a to be fished on the surface, like a popper, slider, worm imitation, etc. I've used the Monic line but only in the warm Southern waters and have been happy with them, as I believe they are (or at least they used to be) the only floating clear line available on the market and throw off less shadow on the flats. They now make one that's supposed to work in the colder waters of the North. As far as seeing your line at noght, in most situations you just need to stay in contact with your fly, 'feel' it. Rarely need to do the 'dead drift' here. At least 90% of the time, I use an intermediate line. If there's waves, you won't want to use a floater as the floating line will be will be much more affected by the wave action than a line that sinks. You will stay 'in touch' with your fly much better.

Good luck with your Vineyard trip. I personally haven't fished there as I usually fish Cape Cod, but 2 of my friends used to go to the Vineyard every year. The only problem with it is that's there is no good time to sleep. Fish can be found any time of day there, especially since the tides vary greatly on different sections of the island.

Have fun!!!!!

Thanks for the help! Like I said, it will be my first time up there, and from what I gather, the majority of the night fishing will be with small, sparse, floating flies. I will be bringing both spools with me (intermediate and floating). Anyway, thanks again for the advice...maybe I will look more into a clear vs colored line.

Make sure you get a line that is made for colder waters. Some lines have horrible memory, like Cortland, in cold water. It gets so bad you can't even cast them. Airflo makes good cold water line.
