NJ Coastal Baitfish & NC Update

Hello all! Back from Kitty Hawk, NC and perhaps some of the worse fishing conditions they've seen in years down there (at least pier/shore fishing anyway). The winds were blowing from the SW at 10 - 20 MPH every day. Only during High Tide did the water warm up and schools of baitfish came close to shore. Then you had to be fortunate enough that the school came close enough to the pier to cast into to catch the blues and pompano that were chasing them. When the pods of baitfish were not around, fishing was SLOW (i.e. useless) On the bright side, I did get to see a few sharks and a barracuda that swam right under the pier. Accoriding to the locals, its been a long time since a 'cuda has been seen that far north.

Last night I was at Martell's Tiki Bar in Point Pleasant for a company meeting and noticed some action happening in the surf. Blue fish were leaping out of the water and crashing the surf chasing some sort of bait fish. So I meandered over to see what was going on. On the shore, baitfish were being washed up for the seagulls to feast on. Having fended off an attack or two, I managed to get one of my own. These baitfish were just a few inches long, and slender. They were a uniform silver on the sides and bottom with a green and black pattern on the top. I asked a few of my colleagues what they were, but no one knew. I've looked around the 'net but cannot seem to finda picture of what I saw. They were not menhanden, silversides or other baitfish I'm familiar with. In fact it looked more like a mackeral... Any ideas on what they might have been? (pictures would be great too!)... Sure wish I had a surf pole or fly rod... It would've been a great 30 minutes of small blue action... Oh well. Figures there would be better action in NJ than NC on my vacation... :D

Sounds like they were tinker mackeral. They are around everywhere right now. Sorry, no pic.

from what I can tell, they were probably some sort of mackeral as mentioned above. found a link to one site that had pics of a mackeral fillet... the coloration and patterns on the skin was almost exact... too bad i didnt have a fly rod with me. I would have used tape and beer bottle labels to tie a pattern! Dammit! I wanna go surf fishing now...
