FLY TYING EVENT
SUNDAY FEBRUARY 24, 2013
10AM—4PM
CALIFON FIRE HOUSE, MAIN ST, CALIFON, NJ

Dette’s Fly Shop & Shannon’s Fly & Tackle, NY & NJ’s oldest fly shops, are
sponsoring the Third Annual Sparse Grey Matter Fly Fest at the Califon
Fire House, Main Street, Califon, NJ on Sunday Feb. 24, 2013.
A casual get together of Fly Tiers. All are welcome to tie or observe. So
come shake off the winter blues and meet fellow fly fishermen, Learn a
new pattern or technique or just join the fun and fill your fly box...

Thanks catskilljohn. SGM Fest was a great event last year.

Looking forward to being there and meeting up with more members of this board.

Just a reminder, the SGM fly tying event is this coming Sunday, bring your materials and enjoy a day of tying and shaking off the cabin fever blues. After the debacle that occured with the Catskill Fly Fest, we are looking forward to a big crowd again this year. Hope to see you guys there. CJ

I was at Shannon's earlier today and we were getting everything ready for next weekend. Should be a very large turnout this year. See you all next Sunday.

Ill probably tie those ugly flymphs ive been filling up on lately. or some stonefly stuff, maybe a go..... or two

So, the show is over, and I thought it would be a good idea to ask you guys who were there what you liked / didn't like about it. To me, the venue is perfect, there is still room for the tyers we had, and room for more if it grows. The lighting is decent, if you positioned yourself in some spots you didn't even need a lamp. The firehouse guys were accomidating, and the burgers were decent, I mean its a firehouse, so you cant expect world class eats, but I thought it was good for both them and us to have a place to grab a bite and not have to actually leave.

So, any ideas that you can think of to better it for next year? I know Joe Fox from Dette's and Shannon's will be doing this again, and we aim to please! Thanks Catskilljohn

John, I'm a bit biased, but I thought it was great again this year. Sure, they could sell Yuengling instead of Bud Light, but all in all a great event. Perhaps we have a tyer tying up on specific fly on the wide screen TV that Tight Lines Production had with them that non-tyers and tyers alike could gather around to see done if we set a schedule ahead like they do with book signings at the Somerset FF Show. But that's not going to change the fact that this is a great winter time outing that brings together many excellent tyers or onlookers that just want to know more about fly tying and spending a day with friends both new and old. And I agree with you that we can add another row of tables if we need to expand for next year.

I think the only thing you could do to make it better is to hold it every year on the same day so we can mark our calendars early for it..... say....... February 30th or the 31st..

There is no February ....ahhhh... I see what you did there...

Upset I missed it but plan to be there next year as long as that Yuengling suggestion is brought to fruition.

I think it's great the way it is. I wasn't tying, so perhaps that would create a different perspective. I intended to stay about an hour, but ended up staying 3 hours; meeting so many people and seeing interesting patterns. Even staying that long, I still missed a lot of people who were there, like Rusty, Tomfly, Macfly, and others who I wanted to meet face to face. Perhaps we need a "everyone from neff run to this side of the room" moment.

Thank you to Shannons and Joe Fox for organizing the event. When I bought a new vise in December, Ramsey Outdoor store is much closer to me, and I could have used a coupon, but I drove out to Shannons to make my purchase because they sponsor great events like SGM and traditional angler day. Glad to hear that it's planned for next year.

It is good the way it is . Where else can you see some of the best tiers in the northeast (not including me) in such a relaxed environment?

I think it's great just they way it is John ! Other than a bigger parking area and maybe a casting pond .. :) BTW great show !

I also thought it is great the way it is and It was a great time. Thank you and everyone for hosting and attending. Look forward to next year! :)

If we got some of our better tyers over by the bar which was unused (not to be confused with the kitchen where they were serving the wrong beer) and had a camera on the vise displaying the fly as it was being tied on the large screen TV that Tim from Tight Lines Productions had, I think many of our non-tyers and others would gather around to see certain flies being tied. We could do it on the half hour and let the tyer have as much time as he or she needs for one fly. It wouldn't be someone tying 100% of the time, just on the half hour.

Or we can just focus on getting better beer:beer::beer1:

I think some dancing girls in bikinis..maybe in cages....and jello shots would make it a much more interesting event....thoughts?

Crusty spinner has some good ideas, especially the beer! But the featured fly tiertyer would be goodguud idea. I wouldnt mind do it. :)
