Trip Report; WB & main 9/14 - 9/16

The trip was quite poor. I couldn't get anyone to float with so I wade fished parts of the WB and main stem on Monday. On Tuesday I took my Poke boat over to Bard-Parker and paddled over to the other side. The WB above Balls Eddy is way off color and pretty much stained with large strands of grass floating down pretty often. I had a "first catch" above Balls Eddy on Monday and hooked and landed a 20" walleye. That was the first walleye I've ever caught in the WB. About twenty minutes later I landed a large trout and then two smaller trout of about 15".

I left the WB at 8:30 a.m. and went back to my place to work on some on-going projects. I kept my eye on the river and saw no rises whatsoever. At 12:30 I drove over to Stockport and only saw very sporadic rises when the clouds obsured the sun for a few minutes. Never saw the same fish rise twice and didn't see any bugs in the air or on the water. Around 5:30 about a half a dozen fish started working in the swift water just above the white house on the NY side. I didn't see any bugs on the water but did get one little 12" brown on an Iso dun and missed another fish. I probably saw a dozen rises but was unable to get any of the fish to eat any of my offerings. Left at 7:15 p.m.

Tuesday morning I drove over to BP and paddled across to the PA side after about a dozen casts with a streamer I had a tremendous take and my rod doubled over and the rod just started to throb. It was very exciting but after a brief run towards me the hook came out. I think it was a striper.

Then I paddled up to the head of the pool and saw lots of Trico spinners and thought there would be rising fish. I waited to 11:00 a.m. and got bored and paddled back to the PA side. Finally at 11:30 I saw fish rising in the deep water near the PA bank but did not bother to paddle back because I knew I couldn't wade close enough to cast to them and I never fish out of that boat. Saw no rises at my place until 6:00 p.m. - then saw a few fish working ocassionally over on the far side. I didn't have the desire to wade over there for maybe an hour's fishing.

Yesterday I went back to BP but wade fished from the NY side from the mid point to the tail-out. Had one solid take on the pause between strips and couldn't hook up then I caught one smallmouth bass. Left there at 8:00 and went back to my place to packup. Watched my pool until 10:30 and got bored so left for home. I saw no really good head rises in two and a half days and while I did see some Tricos on the WB the only other bugs I saw were at Stockport and that was only for about an hour. Some Stenos and a few Iso's. All in all a poor catching trip with no fish on dries. Talked to three groups floating past in drift boats and everyone had experienced the same degree of poor fishing.
