Action at the Hook?

A Polinger

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
I am thinking about hitting up Sandy Hook for the first time this year. Is there anything going on down there and whats working?

Thanks,
AP

A friend of mine has been getting small stripers from his boat in Raritan Bay on bait, so the situation should be similar at the hook. If I was heading to the Hook at this time of year I'd probably hit the bay side ideally on an incoming tide and try to find where the bait is collecting.

Confirming the short stripers report, I ventured out there this past Sunday and saw quite few shorts cought on the ocean side, all on clams. Me and few other guys throwing plastics did not have any hookups, at least in the few hours I was there. I would say blues will show up soon, I read some reports for sporadic ones where and there.

I went last week on Wed. It was very windy. As I was walking down to the beach a guy with a spin rod said they were having issues casting and keeping there line in one place. I am now to saltwater and right not I only have a floating line so needless to say I did not do well.

Question other then a weight line (I plain on getting, soon) and double hall, what else can I do to help my casting with the wind?

Thanks,
AP

You might want to look into a shooting head type system, it will help you get more distance than just switching to a weighted line. Other than that, you want to keep a very tight loop and try to punch your line through the wind.

Blues have been in for a few weeks now. All over the back bay and out front. Stripers shoudl really be heating up in a couple of weeks. Guys have been sporadicaly catching keepers, just have to know where to fish.

As someone convinced me when I first started ffing the surf, shooting heads are a waste of money. As you know you need an intermediate and full sinking line. Second you need to perfect your double haul; it is all about timing. You should eventually be able to power through a strong wind without a problem. Work on improving your casting skills. I have no problem making 60-70' casts in a stong wind. However, there are some days when FFing is just not going to cut it at the shore.

Here is a good link to a lesson on You tube on how to haul:

I spoke to a few friends that fish Staten Island daily who have indicated that the bay is full of bunker and they have caught them as large as 38lb. this week. The outgoing tide is coinciding with dusk so it may be worth a peak. If you don't have a boat go to the outer beaches at Gateway National Park off of Hiland Blvd.

I also heard just up from GKH, Prin. Bay is producing some decent fish as well with a lot of big blue fish in the mix. For the hook, the back water is producing blues, some bass and some weakfish along with all the sea robbins you can handle. Flies? Anything really big to try and entice a striper away from the real thing. Stripers are tough to catch on a fly when they are feeding on 12 inch bunker. Blues, anything big and inexpensive to tie, if you want to target weakfish, go with a sinking line to get below the blues and stripers and throw on a jiggy fly to bounce along the bottom. Or, a grand old spinning rod with a live bunker.

Fished SH yesterday; blues were there in good numbers, 3-5lbs with decent number of larger ones mixed in. I saw few guys with fly rods, hooking up with the blues and occasional short striper in the wash. Get out there now, I say (remember, beaches are closed to fishing sun up-sun down, starting this weekend)
As far as bait, there was bunker and small bait, rainfish or something like that; I guess any flies will work for blues, including poppers.

Sandy Hook and Island Beach state park are not in the "closed to fishing" rule. Also, the beach fishing is closed when the life guards are on duty in most places meaning after about 4pm, you can fish and before about 9. Theres a lot of light before and after these times.

Fished Sandy Hook from 12 to 4, caught a bunch of sea robins on jiggie flies chart/white... didnt see anyone else catching anything... also saw a horrible thing today on our beach, sea robins all over the beach piled up are they getting stranded or is that fisherman leaving them stranded if so thats pretty messed up and they need to gain some respect toward the ocean not only they killing a really cool lookin fish and fun to catch but their making the beach a filthy place to be walking on. Its really Agrivating to see such a sight....

I agree with you about the sea robins. I saw a guy 2 years ago dumping all the robins in the sand several people including myself made comments to him about this but he just kept doing it. I called my friend that is a Ranger at the Hook and told him what was happening. He came over and made sure this guy carried the robins back to his car from the true Hook. There must have been 50 of them. I saw the same guy there 2 weeks later but this time he was releasing all the robins. If the fish dose'nt have a size limit and no limit on how many you can keep then there is not much they can due. They can make you take the dead fish with you. And my friend did follow him out of the park to make sure he at-least took the fish out of the park with him.

As far as fishing is concerned when it's sunny and hot try to concentrate you efforts at nite. Black snake flies work very well also 4 to 6" deceivers work well. And it won't matter what color it is as long as it is white or black(LOL) those are my preferred colors.

Thanks for the tip Hooked, ill have to give that a shot but ill have to pick up my over night permit. hey does anyone know the phone number for the ranger station just in case i ever run in to the same thing i did sunday. I'd just like to inform them when ever i see things like that just so they know whats going on, and so may be they can teach people like that a lesson in respecting the hook, cuz its a great place and i hate to see things like that when all go out to enjoy the salt.. its a shame...

Thanks
Rick

When you get your permit all that info will be in there. If you need any moore info on the hook send me a PM or e-mail me at erik.gonzalez5@us.army.mil . I could probably meet up with you one day a show you some good spots,I've been fishing that area including the Raritan since I was a kid.

Erik..

I'm planning on taking a trip down to the hook on Saturday. First year fishing salt, any suggestions? Should I fish the bay or the ocean side? Is floating like ok to use? Big Flies or Small? any help appreciated

For me the winds decides were i will fish, like im heading down today and the wind will be blowing to the NW which is ideal for the ocean side so thats where ill be. but when the wind is blowing the wrong way i usually fish the bay side which is always productive. Flies i would go with jiggie flies, clousers chart/white, white/yellow, white/blue, surf candies, crease flies maybe, decievers, half and halfs, bunker patterens, crab imitations, there are many more but these are a good start. size wise try them all big and small, if theres big bait use bigger flies, small bait small flies, if your just looking around (prospecting) i would go with smaller flies..

Hope this helps and good luck on Saturday

Fished Sandy Hook Today From About 12 to 5. Caught about 20 or so sea robins and 1 fluke which was really cool never caught a fluke on a flyrod, their a cool lookin fish. One took a chart/white jiggie, a couple were on chart/white clouser and the rest on gray/white clousers. fluke took the gray/white clouser.. All in all it was a nice day to be out.....

I'm going out on friday nite. I'm going to start on the bay and work my way to the hook. I heard some good reports on Blues and Bass working the bunker in the bay in the late afternoon into evening. I will post the results. It's going to be low tide at about 2:30am great for North Beach.:alien:

The Hook this week?

I am going to go the the Hook on Wed.Any reports on action?

AP

What action there has been with stripers lately (actually very little but when it happens it's been sensational) has been from Monmouth Beach and south through Belmar. The Hook has been very unproductive for the past month or more. Bluefish also absent from the surf.

Today

I got there around 8 am and I went to the North beach, I had it to myself. Then the water just exploded with blues, they were 20 ft. to far. I then went over to the bay side but there was just to much seaweed. I then moved to a beach closer to the entrence and I hook into a nice blue but lost it in the surf. All and all it was a good day, I was not at work and there were not to many camp groups around.

AP

So much for my report of blues being absent from the surf. Good to hear there are some around and thanks for the report.

Action at the Hook? Worth it next weekend?

I was thinking about going to the hook next weekend, is it worth it?

AP

HUGE schools of peanut bunker, with blitzes from small blues, with a few giant blues in the mix. watch the birds, then throw decievers and large, colorful streamers, and hold on! If the blitz goes past, or you can cast beyond it, there may be some stripers behind and below it, cleaning up. Bait's ok, too if you swing that way.
