Action at the Hook?

Kind of like Dolphin Fish being called Mahi - Mahi. This must be so nobody thinks flipper is on the menu. Which brings me to another point, I miss those little chunks of Dolphin in my Tuna fish sandwiches, since they went to the Dolphin safe nets.

The Bird wires are still up on the North Beach.
Can still take Fluke from the beach yet , lots of shorts to keepers
Fish are coming on small white , chartruse/white clausers 1/0
or so.
Sept . will be here in a bit!

Not yet

a lot of warm brown water, with an easterly swell, need a hard blow to clean things up followed by stiff NW winds....water still way to warm, as long as no hurricanes hit 2nd or 3 week in sept things should start at least with shots at albies

North beach on Sandy Hook is open.
Lots of dirty water , surf is making some new cuts.
Fished yesterday till dark ,short fluke no stripers

With the current drought, at least the ocean still has water in it. The past couple of days saw stripers and blues from Sandy Hook to Shrewsbury. A couple of small pods of albies popped up and down once. Stripers pushing bait to the top gave fly rod action to fish up to 30". Bottom huggers were bigger fish. I didn't see much if anything happening near the beach except some small bluefish in the evening.

Does anyone have any recent information about the striper run? I've been waiting anxiously to get a chance at one from the beach. Im not very experienced with surf fishing so I would appreciate any help. When will they be close enough to shore to have a shot at? Also, what does this rain mean for surf fishing?

Don't expect a decent run of stripers along the beach until late Oct or November with warm ocean waters. Sure there are some from time to time, but the fall run as far as the beach goes has mainly been in November and December for many years now. Boats are a different story. Current rains won't be an issue for stripers, but the southerly winds will be. Looks like they'll turn to the north soon, but right now is Albie season and they don't like sweet or dirty water so we may need to wait a bit until they're back along the beach. I'm headed out this weekend to the Hook and points south for the Albies and any blues that might be around. Stripers will be a bonus, but I don't count on them. Plus night time is always best for that species and that won't fit my schedule this weekend. Good luck if you get out.

Stripers are in the surf in the early AM. Action is better south of the hook. Bass are feeding on the small weakfish, peanut bunker and rainfish. Bluefish from 2-4 lb'ers to 12 lbs + patrolling the area as well. Water temps on the ocean side are running in the 58 degree area. SW winds foecast with gusts to 30 then switching NW on Friday, still blowing hard. Supposed to change W on Sat. 10 to 15 with some bigger gusts, then back to the S for Sun. Albies seem to be gone in the N, saw one pod two days ago. Heard of some albies near Belmar today... radio chatter.

They have been hitting the beach from brick down to IBSP. I Have been hitting 20 plus pounders on nearly every night on a inland water way. Still tons of bait and fish inside. The best is yet to come.

Went fishing with my two sons, a friend and his son on tuesday afternoon 10/26. We took a 5 man charter out of the Highlands, they drifted with eels and caught a few. I annoyed them all afternoon drinking beer like a fish, smoking cigars, and casting my 5wt like a mad man until I landed this 35" 16 lb striper. Really wasn't much casting at all, I was letting line out, trying to get my fly down, and stripping it back. I caught it about 400 yards off the beach of Sandy Hook.

TT did you land that thing on your 5wt? lol I tried all spring to get a keeper on my 5wt but the best I could muster was a 20" bass. Nice job!

Why cut your mug out? Are you that ugly?

obviously i didn't take the pic, my buddy did. I was intent on letting the fish back into the water, we had already caught two keepers and that is all we wanted. So I didn't see the pic til after he took it and the fish was back in the water, besides i don't really care that my ugly mug isn't in the pic. I hope that sates your querry.

Re: Not yet

Spent the whole morning at the hook from the fishing beach all the way up to north beach. Not even a bump. Saw no bass caught and no one I spoke to had seen anything either. Wind was honkin pretty good out there.

Yes, I was using a 9' 2 piece Orvis TLS Power Matrix tip flex 5 wt.

I've been fishing my 9' 5wt Ross Essence FW and it handled the smaller fish no problem. Great rod FWIW. I would've used something heavier but at the time I only had a 9wt and I was lending it to my dad so that we could fish together.

Guess it is about time..... to hit the beach. Lots of action reported south to IBSP apparently. may skip the Point altho there was action last week. don't want to hit the sand or pay the permit at IBSP so looking for an easy access from Long branch to brielle. Gusty ..... surf pole weather with 10 wt coming along for a ride.. OMG gusts to 50 mph. Maybe tomorrow or Wednesday.

I was at the Hook all day yesterday and it was dead water. Saw one keeper coming off the beach by a guy on a clam at night on the flood, but only saw one short 18" bass other than that. No bait whatsoever. Go figure.

These northerlies should push the bait along the beach and the big fish should be on them, but fishing up on the northern beaches has been slow for the past 6 or 7 days. Have a buddy there right now who will give me a report, so if anything is happening today, I'll be sure to post later on.

Fished the Hook twice this week. On Tuesday I fished the incoming tide from 10am to about 3pm. Did not land a bass but couldn't keep the fluke (yes, fluke) and sundials off my fly. Had one hook-up that was either a bass/blue but that fish came off before I got a look. Was fighting like a bass. Tons of sand eels in the wash and the water was gin clear.

On Saturday I got on the beach well before sunrise and the story was the BIG surf. When you open the door to your truck and can hear the breakers in the North Beach parking lot, you know you are going to have to contend with big water. The water had dirtied up considerably due to the Thurs-Friday storm and no visible bait. I saw one short landed and a TON of folks fishing. Not even a bump for me.

Rumor has it that there is a large body of fish still to our Northeast. We shall see if they decide to come in along the beach and chase bait. Fingers crossed. :)

Went out on a charter on friday out of belmar and had plenty of action off the highlands. Stipers between 27" and 33". Capt said they were new fish as the previous several days had seen no bass.

Hey Gadfly,

What type of imitations where you picking fish up on?

Hi James,

We were using diamond jigs. I have yet to take the plunge of fly-fishing in the salt. Wouldn't normally post a non ff report here, but the information regarding what fish are around is relevant to all.

James,

Before the blow, Clouser sand eel patterns and mushmouths were taking fish.

Tim,

Even when you're casting metal or plugs, the type of metal or plug is useful to fly fishers since it indicates the type of bait the fish are on which then can be also matched with the appropriate fly. Thanks for the info.

The plunge isn't as hard as you might think :)

WARNING - I am headed back down to the northern NJ beaches on Sunday. Since I have been the ultimate kiss of death from the beaches this season, I wanted to give everyone a fair warning that absolutely no fish will be caught this Sunday. Go Saturday or Monday if you want to kill them!!!:)

I'm hoping that as the northerlies lay down a bit and continue to cool the back bays, the bait and predators will be on the move out front. Saturday is for hunting, Sunday is for walking the beaches with a fly rod in hand...I love fall!
