Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Bamboo addict

I couldn't make it up for summerfest, CJ told me you were there. next year for sure.
I will probably be up to the show in Connecticut, I'll see you there.

I feel sometimes as if I am in a parallel universe. Ok lets try one more time. The rod has a money back guarantee. Buy it, cast it, stroke it, poke a bear with it, pick your nose with it. If you are not satisfied return it for a full refund. Seems pretty cut and dry to me. What am I missing? I am sure that more expensive rods are in my future, hell I could have paid for college with what I have spent on flyfishing over the years. I am going to try and get up to this rodbuilding event one the 12th. I will even bring my lowly 325.00 bamboo rod with me and whoever is there is welcome to cast it and tell me everything that is wrong with it....Seriously though Ronbo thanks for your input. Check out the link I sent to Trouser Trout if you have a moment and let me know what you think of the presidential series of blanks. Since I am new to my addiction I want to make sure I am not paying for bad stuff..see I even sound like a junkie. Peace out

This is what I found on the Anglers Roost website.

Write or Call about the Great Pretender Line of Presidential Blanks and Rods. Re-Creations of the Famous Tapers of the Most Famous Rod Makers. You will be Amazed at the Quality. The Rods are all made ( only assembled ) here in the U.S. by Rod Builder Jim Mills of Cherokee, N.C. The Blanks themselves are Hand Made by a Marvelous Craftsman Overseas. Only the Finest Kiln Dried Tonkin Cane is used on these Blanks. The Blanks all come with Two Tips and a Cloth Bag. They are truly Supurb in every way. They are Arrow Straight. Just Think....Now you can Build your own Hardy Marvell at a fraction of the $ 3,000.00 it would cost you today to buy one. The Tapers are all taken from Gould's Book Tips and Tapers. They Follow the original tapers to the T.
Most of the current rodmakers have tweeked the old tapers to make them more refined
and better suited for todays fishing.
I hollow build some of my models to lighten and smooth out the action.
I developed this over 8 years of rodbuilding

These blanks are made in china by Zues rod company.
The quality of their early rods was very bad with delaminations and the ferrules coming off. I have heard that their quality has improved:nose-picking:

I do not recomend these rods.

The only thing that matters is if you like the rod and the way it casts.

only time will tell if it will hold up to fishing.

If you make it up to the Catskills on the 12 th. I would like to see it
Hope it works out for you and turns out to be a great rod.

The green writing was added by me.

Wow. That was one of the best posts ever to NEFF.

I still think a bad bamboo rod like yours is pretty cool to have.

Since your stated purpose on this forum is stir up trouble what do you think my response will be now. I could do one of the following

A: come up to the rodbuilding festival and beat the living daylights out of you (personally satisfying but probably not worth the drive)
B: start to engage you in a long drawn out battle on this forum which will be entertaining for all to watch but Im a seasoned veteran on these matters and frankly your not the challenge you believe yourself to be
C: Hit the ignore button and cruise on forward (my personal favorite)
D: A and C
e: A and B
f: all of the above
g: none of the above
h: fill in the blank

Maybe we should put it to a vote. Everyone PM me with your vote and I will post the results..Dont worry I will make sure we dont the same person voting twice.

Read my posts to this thread. I was actually trying to be helpful.

It just happens that you bought a rod that I would have advised you against buying. I am also advising others to consider carefully whether or not "cheap" bamboo rods are a viable alternative. I don't think so.

I do not judge people by what fly rod or reel they may own or use ,as it is not the equipment that makes a fisherman but the the fisherman himself that makes the equipment . I just bough an HI Lucky strike it is a 3pc 7 1/2 ' bamboo rod that to me has an awesome action and will cast a country mile . This particular rod is currently worth about 100 dollars in mint condition I got mine for 20 bux with a little tlc it will look awesome and will catch fish just like any other 1500-2500 dollar rod that I own.And I'll guarantee you I will catch fish and have fun with it.A lot of guys are going retro and cheap is in as in fiberglass and boo so what ever trips your trigger . These rods are the stepping stone to the more expensive end of the spectrum in this great sport.:)

For low end rods, I buy graphite. LL Bean's streamlight is 100 bucks. It casts amazingly well.

Bamboo is a different game.

How many hours does a rodbuilder spend building a single rod?

How much are you paying for the rodbuilder's expertise?

NOT MUCH. I would guess that the average builder charges no more than 15 bucks for every hour of labor they put into a rod.

To cut corners and try to find cheap alternatives is not the way to go here, when the builders are not making much off of their wares as it is.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Allen thanks for the post I think this captures the essence of what I was trying to say. I started this thread because I was excited to get into the whole Bamboo game. Its yet another area I can explore and learn about. When TT asked the question about my new purchase I simply provided him with the information he requested. I have no desire to sell him a rod or a blank or anything. He is a big boy and can make his own mind up. Also I stated that I will likely buy a more expensive rod down the road but that I was impressed with the one I got and the price was right. Ronbo made his views plain at my request so its all good. I have now cast the rod everyday since I purchased it and I like it. Frankly that is all that matters to me....In fact I can throw a nice tailing loop on this rod Al. You will be impressed:)

Has anybody have any info on Norman Agutters rods. It is a big operation in england I have been researching. It seems that his hand plained rods are pretty nice and fairly cheap. WAs thinking of buying a blank. Does anybody know if they are decent and worth the money?

This evening I got to cast another Bamboo rod that I am having made and I cant wait until its finished. I truly am in awe of the folks that can build these rods.

After having fished primarily fast action rods for the last 15 years its going to take a little getting used to fishing boo rods but I am hooked. BTW thanks Al for the casting tips this evening. It always helps having someone who has a great casting stroke and is also a lefty to show you the ropes. Thanks again...Peace out

Anyone know what a fair price to pay for a Granger Victory Bamboo Rod 8 feet 6 inches with all original hardware in great shape. Slight alligatoring on some of the varnish but otherwise very nice 3pice 2 tips. asking 450. Dont know if the victory was considered a higher end rod or not

I'm thinking the higher end Granger rods are the " Registered", "Aristocrat", "Favorite", "DeLuxe" and the "Premier" model ..

Anyone know of a company called Cane-Craft. A maker of Bamboo Fly rods.

know of them? I cant even find them on the web. Listen, I see you are struggling with this purchase. As a fellow flyfisher I am here to help. Just give me your credit card numbers and I will surprise you and pick out something nice. Don't worry about the money. Money is made to be spent and they print more of it all the time.
