Warmth question to all you hardcore guys

I'm looking to pick up a nice warm jacket for the winter. Two jackets I'm considering:

Patagonia Men's Primo Down Jacket with Gore-Tex® for Skiing and Snowboarding

and

Simms Fishing Products : : Bulkley Jacket

I know down is warm. I've never had "Primaloft" before. Anyone have any experience with it?

We're talking $279.00 (SIMMS) vs. $649.00 (Patagonia).

Both have GORE-TEX outter shells. SIMMS is PrimaLoft and Patagonia is Down.

What do you use, and if you've used either of the above products, how do you like it?

I bought this one for skiing..it is great, warm, wicks the sweat away, roomy and light, but I bet the Patagonia is just as great.....

If you're buying it to fish with, get the Simms. Patagonia is probably too bulky for fishing, not the right type of storage either. If you're buying it for hiking, photo-shoots, skiing, general outdoors, the Patagonia. Having said that, Patagonia's are nice, but I find them to be way overpriced. Check out Helly Hansen for a good alternative, they are just as technologically advanced as Patagonia.

if your thinking warm for winter fishing, look into the battery powered heated jackets, vests, ect that are on the market. They make a real difference on the water and make for a very enjoyable day. Might make you take a boat ride in jan/feb...you would be surprised at the numbers and size of the fish u pull out.

Patagonia but buy it on eBay you will pay a lot less and they have a fair amount of new clothes.

It's not about what jacket you have. It's about your layering. I wear just a Simms G4 guide jacket but I am layered with Merino wool, and fleece. I would just get a gore tex jacket and buy proper layers.

Don't waste your money on pattagucci.

Nice looking jacket but only 2 colors available... Ugly and xtra ugly!

I'll check out the Helly's.. Never heard of them but worth a look.

Found one on Ebay. The problem is I'm not sure if I need a large or xtra large. No returns!

I actually own this one:
Simms Fishing Products : : Pro Dry GORE-TEX® Parka

Nice jacket but I want something I can wear to work and keep warm without layering up. I work in Jersey City and walk about 1/2 mile to my office every day.

:) What makes you say that!

I too wear the SIMMS g4 guide jacket in dead winter with proper layering...The merino wol is where its at...

I did just pick up the Bukly jacket...Will provide a review if I can tear myself away from scantily clad woman at these dam raves...

If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good you fish good...

Unless it has Simms or Patty pasted across it, I will not wear it.

yes, im shallow. yes im materialistic. COME AT ME.

I'm really curious about the Buckly. If you wouldn't mind providing your dimensions (above the waist you pervert), this way I can get an idea of the size I might need... that would be cool. Is it a heavy feeling jacket? I just wanna make sure my vag stays nice and warm while I'm doing the outdoors stuff.

Dennis,

Will provide you measurements tonight once I return to my hotel. Just picked up a new suit so I have the card in my suitcase. Stay tuned.

Here ya go:

ALPHA JACKET - Helly Hansen Official Online Store

No need to layer up, just an base undershirt, a microfleece on top and thats it. I've skiied at -20 with that setup and was warm on the lift ride up, which is normally where you freeze to death. Helly as a company originally strated out making rain gear for North Sea fisherman and oil platform workers.

Looks good, but probably has zero water protection. Minute it rains it will get saturated. For 70 bucks, hey, it is better to look good, than to feel good.

It's definitely not water resistant but I suppose I can use my SIMMS Gortex shell over it and it should be good to go.

I'm still curious about the Jacket Simms has though.

I have to agree with CTobias, Layering is everything. wearing a polypropylene or silk top and bottoms as long underwear and polypropylene or silk sock liners ,then using Redington fleece pants over poly pro bottoms and for the top I layer over poly pro shirt with a micro fleece shirt followed by a polarfleece pull over 1/4 zip ,then i layer that with a Simms Guide Double Polar Micro Fleece Windstopper jacket over that goes a Pacific Fly rain jacket. I wear Hodgeman Lakestream thinsulate lug soled waders for temps below 40 degrees, above that i wear breathable Redington Sonic Pro Zip waders. this is for fishing.
When I am outside taking photos or hiking or hunting I wear the best...Cabela's Hunting clothing. I have two types one for the stand hunting or stationary the other is for when i am stalking or still hunting.
I hunt Maine, and Montana temps can get down to the Negatives in Rangeley or up in Mooshead or the Allagash areas as well as out west, You need clothing that performs under real conditions.
Sorry but Simms and Patagonia are nice..... But Hunters and Trappers see far more bad weather in a season than most anglers ever see.
DC...if i may direct you in a better direction ....do check out Cabela's as well as Duluth Trading Co. they make some really good work wear for cold weather that is also very nice to be seen in as well as performs.
For my money Cabela's kicks the crap out of others

I have the simms bulkely and love it. Primaloft one, and gore Tex, can it get any better? Size wise, get the same as your wading jacket. My G4 that I have previously layered up under is an xl, and so is the bulkley, fits perfect.

I would avoid the Patagonia down jacket. If it gets wet you lose all the insulation the down provides when dry.

Go with simms, you won't regret it.

My concern is... Is PrimaLoft warm? What type of conditions have you used it in and did it keep you warm?

I like the primaloft, it seems to have a self regulating quality similar to wool, in other words its comfortable over a broader temp range, and not bulky. I'm a big fan of wool for layering and outerwear. Merino wool base layer Simms windstopper fleece and guide jacket do it for me 90% of the time plus the Simms winstopper looks good as a casual jacket for on the town

Also... What are your measurements so I can see what size I need if I decide to go this way?

Ok, I'll say it. Wearing Simms stuff for stuff other than fishing makes you look like a bit of a tool. Like the guy who wears his shooting vest everywhere, the dude who wears his photography vest everyday, the dude who wears jeans and an NFL jacket skiing, the geek who wears his larping cape to school.

Maybe, but you only look like a tool to other fisherman, uninitiated chicks like that rugged outdoor look;)

I think that is the look DC is shooting for, he is the same guy who leaves 35 lift tickets on his ski jacket........
