Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

NEFF Get Together.

I'll be there.......WIth cigars and beer.....My little lady is a chef so if there are any requests as far as food goes I could probably arrange some really good chow...

It seems we're up to over a dozen.

Hi folks, RW here

As far as I know, the Gathering is going to be held from May 31 until June 6, so all that attend that will have already been fishing for a week in the Catskills. Our usual meeting place is the Roscoe diner each morning for those that want to stay in touch while we're there, because we stay in different places in Roscoe proper...Reynolds House, Rockland House, the campground, etc. etc.

Our fish-in is informal, and folks can come for any length of time they want to, the whole week, 3 days, four days...a day. Most of us who were there last year (about 35) know each other from the chat room, bulletin board, and various past fish-ins with FAOL.
"The Gathering" as Mayfly calls it was just a spin off from the FAOL Roscoe fish-in, and an invitation to other boards that he and willowhead frequent, so any of us who wanted to, could get together with others from those different boards. Everybody is welcome.

I doubt I can make the njff get-together on June 6, because that is the day I leave to go back to my daughters upstate, and then on back to Maine. But if anybody gets to the njff shindig a couple days early, you can count on me bein at the Roscoe diner eatin my bacon and eggs and drinkin coffee between 8 and 9 a.m. and the rest of the day somewhere on the Willowemoc brookie fishing, or up at the park fishin brown trout under the Beaverkill covered bridge. Some nights I'll be tyin at willow's . Last year we had a good size group but we still all managed to stay in touch with one another. I mean, Roscoe ain't exactly a metropolis ya know? Sorry willow, I mean ya dig!?

Later, RW

I suspect I'll be there for two or three days anyway. I live less than an hour away, but although I'm retired, I have three girls ages 7, 9, and 13, and a wife who works, so the logistics may be a bit tricky.
Hopefully I'll see some of you at the Somerset show in January too.

Hey, did we come to some consensus as to when this is going to fly? Joe T. mentioned June 6? I know that it's 5 months away... but I'd like to see the date nailed down so everyone can fit their lives AROUND it :) .
John

John,
I guess June 6th is the day. Dennis? OK?

Any suggestions as far as agenda or schedule of events?
Do we need an activities committee?
I've never been to a fishin get together. Do you just hang around and fish or do you do other stuff like pin the tail on the trout or bobbing for stone flies?:D
How about a prize for the pool winning sucker or chub caught on a dry?
Seriously, whatever you guys want to do is fine. Fishing a little, hanging out a litte is fine by me.
As I mentioned before, if any one is interested, a few of us will have boats and can take a few people on a short float upstream of the house where there is some real nice water that is out of range of a reasonable walk from the house. Those that choose to stay behind can fish in the backyard. I think a short float is better for that day rather than an all day, but thats up to you.
Also if anyone wants to float or fish Saturday I'd be glad to have you.
Any thoughts?

Bobbing for stoneflies.....

Geez, everyone knows caddis are MUCH more of a challenge. Let's not forget the trout-shaped pinata we'll smack around with our wading staffs or the perennial favorite, charades where we act out famous fly fishing moments from history.... :) I think some sort of agenda would be helpful... I guess suggestions from those that have been to anything similar?

Jon, if you don't mind me asking, what neighborhood is the Barking Trout Cottage? I am familiar with the river, and am just wondering (excitedly)about what "limited access" water will be available to us for the day! There are more than a few places in the WB that without a float, are just off limits.

Thanks,
John

Sometimes these posts get by me, I'm not sure how, but they do! June 6th sounds great. I'll be sure to mark this down on the calendar.

Scheduling of events should go as follows:
1. Meet and greet
2. Bare hand fly toss
3. Rod throw, similiar to javelin
4. Tug of reels, similar to tug of war but instead of using rope, the challenge will be between two individuals. Flyline without backing to be hooked to two reels. When the gun goes off, start reeling. This will take place with each person standing on the opposite bank from each other. Someone needs to be dunked.
5. High jump. Fast action rods prefered for this event.
6. 'Bobbing for Stone Fly's'
7. Lunch break
8. Guide boat tug. Hopefully HydeLowryder and Bruce Miller will accomdate us with their ships.
9. 'Pin the Tail on the Trout.'
10. Dinner and chatter about the days events!!!

Add me to list, I answered other thread. June 6th hope to be up there anyway for Green Drake hatch

June 6th is a lock for me.

Can we set some sort of itinerary for that day to include meeting for breakfast, fishing and meeting later after the evening hatches?

FYI, I can accomodate two additional people on my boat. I will supply the flies, etc.

Sincerely,

HLR

FYI -- MidNightPoacher will not be allowed to fish with me - I practice catch and release only AND do not employ the use of trout pellets, scuba diving or snagging. There is a special place in the world for this person -- and it is not on a trout river.

Mr. HydeLowRider --

I have seen you many times on the river and your flyfishing tactics and jaunts have been well documented on this and other sites.

Hopefully, I will be able to persuade you on the enlightened ways of Midnight Poaching -- fishing in the pitch dark, swinging large wet flies, fishing 20 lb. tippets, wearing dark clothes and black dyed leaders, lines and flies.

You don't know what you are missing.

FYI, that fish you are cradling from the banks of the reknown Beaverkill would be a minnow compared to the size of the beasts that swim at night.

Are you up to the challenge? Maybe you would consider dying your boat to a darker shade of black from the grey scheme you currently employ.

Sincerely,

MP

Hey HLR:

I see you come from Md. How often do you hit the catskill rivers? Seems like a long way to go, it must be an overnight event. Anyway, I was just curious.

I usually hit if from mid-April thru the Fall -- average two/three weekend trips in April, May, June, September, October

I keep the boat hitched to my car during the entire week while rushing up and down the superhighway system down here, even during rush hour, in case I hear that the hatches are hot.

Agenda

I guess the schedule will be directly tied to the hatches. Hopefully the weather will be overcast which should keep the fish snapping most of the day. I will be up a few days in advance so I will have a good idea what time the first hatch of the day starts. We can start early and have some breakfast. Maybe a continental breakfast. I can have lots of fresh fruit ready if someone wants to pick up fresh bagels, muffins etc. on their way up, (since getting a good bagel up here is mission impossible) I don't cook anymore (after I taught my wife how to cook before we were married-she's a great cook now in her own right) but I can probably scare up some omelets or pancakes or something if required.
I see lunch as being semi unorganized since some or most people may want to fish thru lunch or eat at different times (again depending on what's going on on the water) I can go to Costco and get a box of dogs and burgers and have some marinated chicken ready for the grill so that any one that is hungry can help themselves.
Some kind of snacks thru the day so we can fish thru sundown.
Weather permitting I was thinking of setting up the chairs down on the river flat and we can have a campfire to sit around while telling tales of the ones that did/didn't get away. We can have Little Italy in town cater dinner if we want. (Pizza, trays of ziti, lasagna, veal parm Etc.)
Any part or all of this is open for changes. Just thought I would throw something out on the floor to think about.

It all sounds good... but I'm easy. Let me know if I can do anything. BAGELS... I have not had a good bagel since leaving Jersey! Does anyone know if the bagel shop is still there on Elmora in Elizabeth? Ahhhh... I can almost smell a warm salted bagel right now... Oh yeah this is a fishing board... Being on the "no kill", I guess that rules out pan fried trout on the open fire huh? :).
John

I could bring a Salmon I caught in Alaska.....I'd have to know interest so I could save one for the occasion. I have a secret salmon sauce that makes my mouth water just thinking of it....ED

<--------One like this...Maybe a bit bigger

Hey WB,

I'm curious. I used to have a seasonal at Caucci's campgrounds so I'm somewhat familiar with the area. Where is 'Barking Trout Cottage' in relation to Caucci's, the religeous camp, either of the 2 PA State gamelands parking areas or the WBA?

Anybody else want to "sign up" for the NEFF Get Together based on the two new pictures up top? Jon, that is awesome. And so green... nothing that four months won't cure... :) I think I see a fish in every riffle there...

John

John,
The pictures lose a little clarity when you downsize the photo to under 300k but at least you get an idea of what is there. More pics to follow

Let's make a note to make sure the Midnight Poacher and our new "Dry Fly Purist" spend some time together. We could have a story telling contest... of course it would be non-fiction...
John

Well the "DFP" mystery has been solved.
Just (just!)4 1/2 months and counting...
NJFRED says he's in(buddy included), is everyone else still on board?
John

Unfortunatley, Jonboy is out. He sent me a PM lettin me know something came up. Since there's an opening, count my Dad in. I told him about it and he was pretty excited. Some of you will get to meet him at the show this weekend. He'll be there Friday and Saturday.

As Dennis said, I will not be able to make the NEFF gathering. I will be up in Martha's Vineyard fishing for stripers. Because this is my first year going up there, I am pretty excited. Hopefully, I will see ya'll at the show this weekend. I won't have a name tag, but I'm sure I'll meet up with Dennis, JoeT and some others (I already know) some time on Sat. See ya this weekend-
