the 'GATHERING', Roscoe, NY, spring '04

Mayfly

Trout Hunter
This may be of interest for those of you intending to join in with the festivities of the ‘Gathering’ in Roscoe this coming May/June. It may also be of some interest for those of you who can’t attend but wish you could.

I’m thinking about putting together a large booklet of information relative to the event. In order to do that I must first acknowledge what I consider the foremost book written on fly fishing in the area: Its history, people, traditions, places, rivers, fly tying, techniques, etc. Not surprisingly, CATSKILL RIVERS by Austin Mac Francis is that book. Another book, BEAVERKILL by Ed VanPut is similarly excellent and will be frequently referenced. The goals of the booklet is to get you excited about the event and provide information that may help you to understand the significance of the area and perhaps give you some insight into the fishing opportunities that await you.

The only consideration I ask is just a little financial support to help pay for the printing and the mailing costs. I’m estimating a booklet of perhaps 20-25 pages. Therefore, the cost will be around: (printing of: approx. 25pages @ $0.07 per page = $1.75) + (mailing: @ $1.50 each) = approx. $3.25 per copy.

In order for me to learn if something like this is worth the effort I will need to know how many of you would want a copy or copies of the type of booklet I’ve described? If a significant number of you are willing to make a commitment I will start on the project. If not, I won’t. Remember, you will only be paying actual printing & mailing costs. There will be no profit. The number of copies printed and available will reflect the number of commitments made.

So, if you would want a copy of this booklet once it is developed, please get in touch with me. I imagine it’s difficult to commit at this point but nonetheless, in order for me to proceed, I do need your honest and sincere commitment. If the numbers warrant it and I do proceed, as the work nears completion I will contact you, let you know the actual price and ask that you send payment.

I’ll need to have responses by January 18th and will announce whether this project is a ‘GO’ or a ‘NO GO’ on January 21st.

Please post or email if you have any questions.

I'm in......I need to learn as much about that area as I can so I can come and fish it without "needing" someone to hold my hand....Not that I'd turn down free advice from anyone familiar with the area.

First offlet me say that I do plan to attend this gathering. Second, I will be camping out at the Covered Bridge Camp ground in Livingston manor. Allan, I have the books you mentioned and will also depend on Willow to steer me through the rest that I do not know. However, will one day be a Neversink day. I have never fished this river and would love to try it.

Andy B

Colston,

If you knew my history you'd know that the Neversink is my personal favorite. I intend to spend a day on it even if I have to, although I doubt I will, go alone.

Allan and Andy, of course we will have a Neversink day. Let's just say Thur. June 3rd for now, OK? It was a lot of fun last year on Neversink day. Most everyone caught fish that day. Allan, go to the calendar and click on "A Gathering" for any day between May 31st and June 6th. All days after May31st refere you back to May 31st for details. Oh and Andy, "mind the company" LOL that man is almost as good as me at playing tour guide. Even though last year while engrossed in conversation with RW, i did miss an exit and take the scenic route. LOL. Still managed to get where i was going before Allan showed up though. He must of been looking for us. LOL. mark

Willow, Okay about Neversink. At least for now.

I can't find anything on calendar so I must be doing something wrong. No big deal.

I'm with Allan, all I can find on the calendar is a bunch of peoples birthdays on May, 31, and not much else.
Bob

Willow,

I took your advice. "If that don't work throw your computer out the window and go buy a new one." Well, I didn't do that but I kicked it, threw it and smashed it to pieces. It is now FUBAR!
You owe me $$$s if this was a f***up on your end.
ROTFLMAO.

The reason the events aren't appearing in the Calendar is because Mark posted them as PRIVATE! Mark thought that a private event would only be seen by members of this site (which makes sense). Unfortunately, private means to be seen only by the person posting it.

I'll see if there is a modification I can make for this one. Either way, I suggest making it public. If the unregistered people see it, who cares? Maybe if they see it, they will register. Just a though.

I've added some January dates to the calendar. You'll notice them on the mini calendar to the right side of the screen, they are
black and underlined, just like this link :) (See the example below). All you've gotta to do is click on the underlined number and it will bring you to the event.

Happy 2004 to all of you!!!

This 'Gathering' is kinda getting out of hand, no? I mean it will be nice to meet up with fellow anglers from this board, etc, but I would like to have some room on the streams. This is one of the best weeks for hatches. I would imagine all rooms are booked already with every flyfisher in the northeast coming, it's turning into Woodstock!

AGREE, AGREE, and AGREE some more.

Who the he** wants bumper-to-bumper traffic, parking areas or pull-offs full of cars and wants to fish shoulder-to-shoulder?

Whoever intends on going has seen the announcement. Take the thread off the site already

I am of the same mind as you guys, however I also think it's a kinda self serving mentality. I know most of the "regulars" here and on the other boards probably have the date marked on their respective calenders, but is that the point of the thing? Or is it to promote more of a networking/friendmaking atmosphere? As Willow has said Roscoe is a public place and besides even if it is removed from this board will it be from others? I still would like it smaller for myself but I question my wisdom..You can call me the devils advocate if you'd like..but hey I've been called worse....LOL...Respectfully ..ED

Hi Fly Guy,

Agree. The event was a 'public announcement and invitation' on certain sites. It will be a chance for anyone who attends to put a face to a poster or fellow site person. I'm sure no one will tell someone else they are not wanted. However, that does not mean that we need to promote it up the ying/yang!

It was announced on some sites. It was read by site visitors. Who chooses to go or chooses not to go is up to the individuals.

In a similar vein, I chose to go to the Danbury Show becuase it is intimate, I can walk around, speak with people, renew acquaintances, see what I want and tie. I choose not to go to Somerset Show because it is the exact opposite. I'm just hoping that this event doesn't get so populated that it becomes impersonal.

The idea that a great number of fly anglers from the Northeast will converge on Roscoe for one week is exciting and stimulating. Imagine being able to fish and talk with other like minded individuals for a week. All drawn together in one place by a common interest. The sharing and brotherhood will be fantastic. We have 51 other weeks to fish, adequate time to to find the isolation some seek or to share moments with a few friends. Some of the concerns about posting the dates make it clear why many in the fishing fraternity look on fly fisherman as snobs. If fear of crowded streams and great company is bothersome, stay home. If sharing the joy of fishing and companionship is important, mark you calendars now. The "gathering" is on, the fisherman are ready and the event promises to offer something for everone.

Ahab,

<"Some of the concerns about posting the dates make it clear why many in the fishing fraternity look on fly fisherman as snobs"
>It's official. I am a bonfide snob because I like: serenity; hearing the water cascading over rocks and not incesant loud boisterous shouting; seeing a deer drink 15 feet away from me across the mountain stream and not some guy taking a whiz behind some tree; the smells of a damp forest; casting with concern about my position to trees and bushes not other fly fishers too close for comfort; being able to share some stories about the events of the day; being able to sit down, stretch, relax and watch the river without a concern that someone is going to jump into the water and wake me out of my contemplation. Yes, there is companionship, comraderie, information and good times to be shared but let's not forget how much we enjoy fishing and why.

<"If fear of crowded streams and great company is bothersome, stay home."
>Regardless of the company, a crowded stream is a crowded stream and it is bothersome. However, there are many miles of rivers and other alternatives then the one you mentioned.

<As far as, "We have 51 other weeks to fish ... ",
>I don't and neither do most people around here.

<"The "gathering" is on, the fisherman are ready and the event promises to offer something for everyone."
>Yes it is. I just hope that one of those 'somethings' is not gridlock in town or on the water.

Just one 'snobs' opinion.

the Gathering.........

OK guys, let's not bicker about it. Like Ahab said, if you got a problem with it, stay home. I highly doubt it'll be so well attended that it causes traffic jams in Roscoe. It's only a week. I'm going to make sure the Roscoe Dinner knows about it though, so we can get good service in the mornings. And, that the Rockland House knows, for the same reasons. If, we get to many tyers, i'll switch the tying sessions at night over to the Rockland House as well. I can handle bout 8 to 10 guys tops at my house. Last year we usually had more but not everyone tyed at the same time. Some guys just read, (350 FF/FT books here), one guy played quitar for us each night, and there are tons of FF/FT/Music videos, vcr/dvd. So, we'll see what happens. As i have previously asked......could you all please let me or Allan Podell know if you are comming, so we can keep a head count so to speak. AND if you plan to bring your tying things and tye. We will have to let the Rockland House know what to expect, (nightly and), for the Blow Out diner (farewell), on Sat. night. Plus, if we do need to use the side dinning (at the Rockland House) room for tying, i need to know how many?? Thankx, mark

Whaddya mean gettin out of hand? It's already out of hand. All I know is I'm going for a full week, and I'm going to Roscoe to go fishing....period....gathering or no gathering, and I damn well better have a place to sit down and eat breakfast in the Roscoe diner each morning or I'm gonna tell.

Later, RW

Mark, hope I made the dedline. I would like a booklet. Let me know how much. I'm gonna try to make over your way this spring and look forward to meeting you and maybe take a class. Roger

Hi Roger, et al,

You made the deadline. If you look at the first post about this I wrote that I will decide by Jan. 21 whether or not to attempt to write that booklet. I'll post a follow-up on that date.

Well Roger, i'm very glad you can make it. Allan will decide about the booklet, depending on how much response he gets. That's his baby. Please make sure to bring your fly tying stuff with you for the "Gathering." I look forward to meeting you? Will you be at the Fly Fishing Show in Somerset, N.J.? Didn't i see your name on the list for a badge/name tag? Ok, take care and be well. mark

willow, RW here

I already made reservations with Tommy at Rockland House for the whole week. Will be comin in Monday morning the 31st. I might even decide to come down Sunday the 30th. I'll drop by your house when I check in or we can do dinner at Rockland House that evening. Luv that salad bar. I'll be there through the following Sunday. There is a whole bunch of brookies I want to get reaquainted with in the headwaters, plus a few new places I been reading about.

Later, RW

Perfect RW! Experience teaches, and there is NO substitute. You know..........................been knowin'. LOL Let's just hope that those who should, realize how important it is to get their reservations made NOW!!!!!! I had diner at the Rockland House tonight, (Riverside, last night) and watched Philly screw it up again. I only mention Riverside for those who do not know it as another possibility for their lodging during the Gathering. It's one step up from the Rockland House, but further away from town. Actually it sits on some GREAT water (Beaverkill) though. Folks again, if you snooze, you loose. Get those reservations made NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! mark

Mark, I don't think I'll be able to make it. The only show I've been to is the one they hold in Ithaca at the high school. There are a few vendors and the Cornel Coop Ext. get the kids to do displays of aquatic lifecycles. Its to bad they stopped funding for the Community Fly Fisher. They closed the shop in Dec. They want to get away from retail. Rich at the shop was a real help. But you can never learn everything about flyfishing. You can always lern something from this sport and its followers. Roger

springtime is comming...........

Well Roger, hopefully we will be able to get in some good fishing this spring. I'm hoping by May 1st, things will be really hot. Lots of bugs and rising fish. I'll show you some really nice spots on the Willow. By the way, do you know Mike Houge over at Badger Creek Fly Tying very near you? I know a lot of people were very saddened by the closing of the CFF. mark

Is that the guy that you were suposed to send me his website for materials?.... I'm looking forward to fishing in that area.. and maybe fishing in the same streems that my grandfather did 60 years ago... There still thinking about selling the shop... I guess they have a few people looking at it. but now I can explore other wild places. Roger

I'm not sure if it's the same guy or not Roger. How far back are we talking? Sorry, i must of forgotten to send you the info. What type of materials were you looking for? I may not be able to reply back til next week now, Somerset and all............mark

I am somewhat uninformed about the gathering even though there has been a lot on this site about it. Who is putting it together or sponsoring it ? Is there some printed matter showing a schedule of events ? Is there some cost involved ? Exactly where is it being held ? All I have really seen on this site is come the gatthering, get you rooms and all kinds of stuff going on. Is this just some show up and see what develops or is it organized?
