Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

the 'GATHERING', Roscoe, NY, spring '04

Hi Arnold,

Let's see if I can answer your questions.
You can say that a couple of guys are 'organizing' the event. Actually we just picked a date and might arrange a few activities, totally voluntary of course, during the week. There is no sponsor. The only 'costs' are those you personally incur for food, lodging(camping), anything you buy, etc. It is being held in the Roscoe area from May 31st through and including June 6th. It is, as you describe, "show up and see what develops".

For example, we will probably use the Roscoe Diner as a morning meeting spot for breakfast and to figure out what to do that day. Some may want to go to Beaverkill, some to Willowemoc, some to Neversink, or spots inbetween. For supper some of us may arrange to meet at a restaurant or at a campsite (for those of us who camp or anyone). We'll probably arrange for a place where we can meet, bs and to tie flies at night.

There'll be more information forthcoming in the months ahead. You can look at the menu at: www.flyanglersonline.com Click on 'Fish-Ins' and then look up Roscoe, 2003. That'll have information and photos from last year. Information will be just about the same this year.

Looks like it might be busy so reservations may be a good idea.

Hope this all helps and maybe you'll be able to make it.

the gathering

Hi Arnold...........last year Allan and i were the organizers, and it was called a Fish-IN officially because we did it with and through www.flyanglersonline.com and they call all their gatherings, Fish-Ins. This year we have 4 club/web-sites invited so we are calling it a "Gathering" instead of a fish-in. That's all there is in the way of a difference from last year. Allan told you reservations "may be a good idea." Trust me, make them NOW!!!!!! Or you will not get a room, B&B, campsite or anything else, after say April 1st. Get it out the way, and your home free. Sure hope you can make it. later, mark...

Mark that is the guy!!! I just hit his site, it's AWESOME!! I may stop and see him later. I think he could recomend the best flies for steelies up here and maybe show him some of my landlock streemers. Thanks Roger

the gathering in Roscoe

hey willow I will be up there wouldent miss this for nuthin:)

YO! slic

OK slic, GREAT! sure glad your bringing some Gatti rods for the guys to try out too. I been hootin' and hollerin' about Gatti rods for months on here. Course, one cast and that's all it takes to sell you anyway, LMAO. Welcome aboard slic. Lot of really good guys on this site. Unfortunately, no chicks, LOL. mark:cool:

Very good, I'm looking forward to try one of these rods that Mark brags so much about. I can't wait to try one. Any bamboo or are they all bamboo?

I will have 2 Ron Kusse boo rods and several Gatti rods with me

Mark,
I saw all the good things they were saying on the FAOL board about Gatti rods a couple of years ago, and now I have three, and they are three of my four favorite rods. Sorry about the Fly Shop not working out. It's a tough business. I head up your way eight or ten times a year, and I hhought it would be a nice place to hang out and swap lies, er ... make that stories. ;)
I'm sorry I missed you at Somerset on Saturday. We will manage to hook up one of these days.
Bob

Is it Spring yet?

Hey Slic! Hey Willow!

Best,
Black Gnat

Hey BG, man i tried that Maine Coon Cat you gave me at Somerset, and that stuff dubbs so nicely it's redickalus. LOL. Goes on as easily as anything i have ever used, including Beaver, Fox, Rabbitt, or anything. NICE STUFF!! You don't even need wax. Wonder what it might look like with a bit of KF mixed in, he he he. Now where's my coffee blender, lol. Ok Bro., see you in June. And make sure you bring your buddie the rod marker with you, he he. Five and a half ft., one piece............he he he. mark

Dennis,

The Gatti's are graphite, I've heard great things about them but have yet to try one out. Hopefully I get a chance to come up during the gathering and can test cast one to see what all the fuss is about.

Over at FAOL they love them.

I think Pete will make it over to the gathering for a couple of days.
I'm thinkin' he'll bring a few of his boo creations for us all to ooh and ahh over. He's one lucky guy, I think. If he wants a boo of a particular lenght and taper, he just builds it!

Glad you like the dubbing. Shedding season is coming up in a couple of months;I should have bagsfull! I'll bring you lots more.
:)

BG, RW here

I been using Coon Cat fur for my dubbed bodies for years. Between my cats, my daughters, and some trades I made I've got nine different shades. Thought you knew that willow.

Later, RW

RW,
I have access to 2 cats. One has dark grey almost blue-black fur (is there such a thing as a black dun?) and the other is a light ginger to cream - perfect for light cahills and the like. I'm gonna have to hunt down some other colors :)

Willow,
dunno Bud, you're gonna have to take that up with pete.
I'm sure you can work something out!

Best,
Black Gnat

Mark,

If one was to make a 5'6" 1 pc rod what line wt and action do you like? Just wondering :)

Tight lines,

Pete

Hi Pete, well i remember trying out Dave's last year and it seemed real nice. Course it's been a while. Isn't his 5' 6"? I'd probably want it to be a four wt. just so that when needed, i could get a nice 40 ft. cast say. Do you think a 6 ft. rod would be better? Or maybe a 6 ft. 3 wt.? Thing is, i'll only be using it on these little itsy bitsy tribs up here. Which do you think might be better all around, 5 and a half 3 wt., 5 and a half 4 wt., 6 ft. 3 or wt., 6 ft. 4 wt.????? Far as action is concerned, probably a medium to medium fast. Be using mostly dry flies. Doesn't need to be to fast. Won't be casting far anyway. And you never know when you might get a lunker. LOL. Also, the biggest fly i might throw would be a size 10. Thankx for checking in. mark

Mark,
I will put together a couple of different rods for you to test out and then you can pick one. It in March when they will be ready. I have to finish up a rod rebuild for Dave first. I do have a 5' 3wt 2pc rod thats mine if you want to try it out. Its ready to go when ever you may want to try it out. Just e-mail me at blacklabflies@hotmail.com and we can talk more about it. If anyone else would like to try this rod you are also welcome to. All that I ask is you pay for the return postage and insurance.

Tight lines,

Pete

I just made my reservations for the gathering can't wait hope we do some tying at night willow
later monty

family affair

Hey Monte, lol glad you finally found the site. I've been in Manhattan a lot this weekend. Wanted to watch the super bowl. Not a bad game. Janet was lookin' pretty good too, LMAO. We WILL tye EVERY night of course. Just not sure where yet. Depends on how many want to participate. If we get simply to many guys for my house, i'll have made previous arrangements for that. Hope your bringin' the whole family Monte. Sawkill, sorry i missed your previous reply up above. But i'm glad you love your Gatti(s) as much as i do. But who wouldn't right! Pete, i guess maybe i thought Dave's was a one piece, is it? What are some of the different configurations you build them in? mark...

Mark,
Daves rod is a 5' 2pc. If you want a 1 pc I can work with you on that. I have some of the tapers that I have worked out on my website blacklabfliesandsupplies.com but they can be a starting piont to some thing new. I just got some cane today so I will be firing up the beveler any day now. I just might get that 1wt for slic yet.

See you in May or sooner,

Pete

cane

Ok, i (for whatever reason) thought Dave's was a one piece. Is there any advantage to a one piece? Because a two piece would be better for travel. But if a one piece cast nicer, and or cost less? Let me know, ok? I'm gonna check out your site. mark

Mark,

I'm thinking of camping at Twin Islands instead of Roscoe campgrounds. Been told the water right in front of T.I.s is much nicer then Ferdon's Pool. Which do you think or which have you heard is better?

Mark,
Is there any agenda for the week-long gathering, like what's going on each day? I can most likely swing over after work on a couple days. Could even manage to bring the boat and do an evening float if any are interested. Only about 3.5 months to go!!

Bruce

Mark,
The one pc rod will have a little more feel to it and will be sweeter to cast. They are cheaper due to the fact I do not have to screw with the fitting of a furrel. But I do not think that there is as noticable difference between the two with a rod under 6 feet. When you are talking rods over 6' then there is a very noticable difference in casting. This is even more so when you go to a 3 pc rod. If you have any questions or want something that is not on my website we can work it out.

Tight lines,

Pete

Bruce,

Last year most everyone decided, kinda on the fly, where to go or what they were doing in the daytime. Most evenings, after dark, were spent tying flies and bs ing. One night Poul Jorgensen was kind enough to do a demonstration at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center. Chances are that a similar venue will take place this year. Guys will meet for breakfast at the Roscoe Diner and decide what to do from there. I think some of us want to spend one day on the Neversink. Probably Thursday. Of course, we're hoping that the weather and conditionsare favorable throughout the areas waterways.
As far as a boat: I'm not sure how many will want to go to the Delaware rivers.

Hope you make it.

Allan, well if you do go to the Neversink, I would like to know when and where. It's closer for me than the Roscoe area or the D. I would certainly be interested.

Bruce

Bruce,

Not much is planned and nothing is cast in stone. Personally, I intend to spend a full day on the Neversink, starting near the reservoir and then heading down to Bridgeville in the evening. I grew up all along that stretch and want to rekindle some old haunts.
As the date draws nearer I'm sure more information and maybe some plans will become clearer. Right now I'll say that Thursday, June 3rd will be slated for the Neversink.
Drop me an email sometime if you want.
