the 'GATHERING', Roscoe, NY, spring '04

Hi Allan,

I stayed at the Twin Island Campground last year and the school house pool was great as were the other campers.

Lauder

Allan, (i'm gonna do this in three seperate emails, so nobody misses their's) two things. First, i fished the "School House" water for the first time last year with Les Maynard, i think you know him. He comes to the Sat.'s at the CFFC&M all the time w/and w/o his wife. He's a photographer and used to have a fly shop up state. Anyway, he stays at Twin Islands every year all season. It is probably THE best dry fly water on the Beaverkill. I happen to like the water at Ferdon's Eddy (very deep pool), a lot myself. But "School House" is fantastic dry fly water. I would stay there if i were you. I have no idea of the difference in cost from the Roscoe Campgrounds. You CAN fish through the "School House" water, if you get in at Twin Islands pool and work your way down. But you have to stay below the high water mark. The people who own the Twin Islands Campgrounds are very nice though and i can't imagine them getting up tight. The eve. i fished it, there was a serious Caddis Hatch and the fish were taking both emergers and adults. In fact, they were sometimes jumping out of the water to catch the Oct. Caddis. It was amazing to watch. Les is a big fan of, and i think actually the originator of, The Bowtie Caddis. And he was killin' 'em with that fly too. Second: i was thinking of Thurs. for the "Neversink Day" also. So let's make that official.

Also, don't forget that my allustrious co-host Allan Podell (Mayfly) is a very talented and proficiant fly tyer who has many years experience tying the classic "Catskill Style" fly patterns. He also has a new body material that he might want to show you all. It's fantastic stuff, and can be used on dries or wets. Makes a GREAT segmented body. I've been using it myself for a couple years. "Maybe" we can get Allan to do a little demo for us one night?????? He will also be tying at the CFFC&M on the Sat. afternoon of the "Gathering" from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. so......

Bruce, at this point nothing is set in stone. Except THAT, we DO meet EACH day at the Roscoe Dinner in the morning at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast and then, decide what we will do, so as to be headed for the water by 8:00 a.m. This is the way we did it last year, and it worked just fine. So far we have the Neversink River Day on Thur. June 3rd, and the One Fly Contest on Sat. June 5th. I may move that to Fri. June 4th depending on who's tying at the CFFC&M on Sat. June 5th. Last year we had a huge group of folks who all hung out and watched Keith Fulsher (famouse for his Thunder Creek series of streamers, and for Hairwing Salmon Flies) tye from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. My wife and i haven't missed but a very few Sat. afternoon fly tying sessions there in probably 10 yrs. I take down the recipes and she does drawings of the flies and we have hundreds of pages of this from over the years. We plan to do a book someday. So, you can count on Thur. June 3rd for Neversink River Day. And i'll post it when i get it down for sure about the One Fly Contest. We may also try to get someone to do a spey casting clinic for us.........i'm working on that. And i'm also working on a fly tying clinic by Mary Dette, and possibly Tom Mason. I'll keep you'all posted.

Yes, last year i asked Poul Jorgensen to do us a demo of a few flies and he graciously agreed. We held the demo in the classroom at the CFFC&M and they charged us $50 for the use of the space, so we all chiped a buck or two. You know how museums are, LOL. It was WELL worth it though. Poul is very giving of his time and efforts and he did four or five of his most classic flies for us. It was great! mark

Mark, et al.

I decided to make reservations at the Roscoe Campgrounds. When I did, I learned that the owners are taking over the Red Rose Motel this week. They are gutting it, so to speak, and doing a major renovation. I asked about an activity room and they said the Motel will have one in the house that should seat 30-35 people. I inquired about using it for tying and Scott said 'no problem'. I believe a partner is Ken from the Baxter House. The Red Rose will also have, again according to Scott, a much improved restaurant/dining room.

I should add that the Red Rose Pool, on the Beaverkill, is an interesting piece of water and generally fished from the far (southern) side into the near(northern) side.

Anyway, the improvements at the Red Rose and availability of space creates an opportunity for fly tying at night and perhaps a place to eat dinner.

Lastly, I am efforting (like that word) on the booklet. Think I found a way to get some great maps to include in it.

Later guys.

yeah cool word

Hi tye, (Mayfly).......i still just think FAOl after so long. Well i've known all about the Red Rose thing for some time. In fact it was already happening during last years Fsih-In. It has taken Scott a very long time to get the liquor license, and that was what was holding up the deal. I'm glad to hear that he has finally got it together. Allan, you know Ken from the Baxter House. For whatever reasons, he and Scott have becoem like best friends or something and are doing the shows together and everything. I hear they ARE going to be partners at the Red Rose. That's a good thing. They are both very likeable guys. Ken is a member of the CFTG and i think we can get Scott to join too. Anyway, i like the idea of perhaps doing the tying there at night. THIS is good, VERY good. We'll have food and drink right there. COOL! In fact we ought to try and perhaps just reserve the whole damn place for the week, LOL. I could just put it on my visa (Frequent flyer, freguent flyer, YES!) and collect from the guys. Think i'll go see Scott. Hopefully they'll be ready by then. So i see you know the trick to the Red Rose pool. Yes, it does fish better to the road. That's where the fish lay. There's a trail on the sounth side bank to walk down to where you wade out about half way. I love that pool. This year i want to go down to Trestle Pool and try that. I'll get back to you after talkin' with Scott. mark........p.s. thankx for all the efforting...........:D

Mark,

* About 'just reserve the whole damn place for the week', ... don't think that would go over this year. Let's see how they clean it up.
* About Scott as a member of Guild ... I'm pretty sure he is already.
* About Red Rose Pool ... Shut the **** up!

LMAO...............thought Scott was too. He's made a meeting or two. Just didn't know if he had paid up. It's soooooooooo expensive, LOL. Actually i was just kidding about the rental of the whole place, although.......................frequent flyer, ditto. LOL. But perhaps next year for sure. I gotta feelin' there gonna make it really nice for fisherman. Scott seems to actually understand who it is that makes this community what it is, in terms of the economics. Fly Fishers ARE the economy, case closed. Anything happens to these rivers, and we be talkin' Oaklahoma in the '30s. I don't give a damn HOW green your valley is, dig? That's why the Gathering is so important.........it'll help to show the "locals" just how serious we are about protecting what we have here. Don't get me wrong, but having the Gathering here every year and growing it into something like the Sowbug would really be a good thing for Roscoe. THAT'S what i want to talk to Scott about. Setting up a situation for next year where we have tying day AND night. Something like the Rondezvous but on a bigger scale.......say 100 tyers. I know it would be hard to get guys off the river at that time of year, but that's my view for the future. I'm sure we could get guys to do half day shifts, and tye early and or late every other day. Can you imagine a week of fly tying "events/contest?" And all the fishing on top of that. WHEW!!!! It's gotta happen man. In fact i think we should change the Rondezvous date to the same week as the Gathering, and make it a week long. Then the Gathering is the Rodezvous and visa versa. It'll be called the whatever annual Roscoe Rondezvous and Gathering. Or just the Roscoe Rondezvous, sponsered by the CFTG. Then me and you won't have to do allllll the work. LOL. But we will have tying going on at all times from say 9:00 a.m. to 12 midnight. WOW!!!!!!! We can raise money for conservation by having a tyathon around the clock for two days too, just like they do at the FFF I.C. every year. By the way, i hold the record for that event.......7 and a half hours straight tying, 9:00 P.M. to 4:30 A.M. My regular working hours, lmao. Well, all "stuff" to think about. mark.......

willow, RW here

I think I got ya on that tyin time..this past October I tied from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for two days at our big state fair here in Maine in the conservation center. 12 hours straight both days. phew! I guess the gathering is growing in leaps and bounds. Gonna have a lot of folks there this year.

Later, RW

Mark,
We need a starting piont. Let me send you my 5' 2pc 3/4wt. Take it out and cast or fish it if it is possible. Let me know what you like and do not like about it and we can take it from there.

Tight lines,

Pete

"The Gathering" accomodations recomendations

I will be there for probably half a week. I think it looks like the second half. Any thoughts on accomodations, I am not at all afraid to camp actually I think I might prefer it, but if I change my mind or don't end up there solo as I hope to does anyone know the rates at the Rockland House or The Baxter House(if they have rooms only).....If no one has the rates can somebody list a number for the campground and the Rockland house. I have some info on the Baxter house somewhere.....thanx guys....ED

Pete, YOU GOT IT! But you might wanna wait til say the middle of March. There aint no way you can do anaything, (cast or fish) right now. If you wanna send it with a reel and the appropriate line, i will give it a casting workout. But i don't wanna damage any of my lines on snow. Dig? Let's wait. Sounds like the best way to work this out though. Maybe we could get it down to a point where we could work it all out by "Gathering" time. That would be nice. If not, we've got the whole season. Would be nice to be using it before the next winters snow though, LOL.

Ed, at this point sounds like your looking to go one of two ways. Either in a campground, or first class. If you wanna go the gampground way, stay at Twin Islands. I do not think you'll be able to make a reservation until May 1st. Unless i'm mistaken, they are open until then. So, get the number and make that call on May 1st. You should be ok that way. It is a bit close, but i think you'll be ok. If your gonna go indoors, call the Reynolds House, and do it NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Case closed. I'm getting a bit tired of reitterating this. And since i have to keep doing it for the newbies, and those who still have yet to even find out. This will be the last time i do it for you. LOL. No b.s. The word NOW is a very easy word to understand. Dig? mark...........p.s. Reynolds House is the best.

Actually Ed. i think RW is exactly right, to the $. Reynolds House will be a bit more, but it will come with a good breakfast. That way, all you'll need when we meet at the Roscoe Dinner each morning (which by the way is a 30 second walk from the Reynolds House) is a cup of coffee......to further jack you up! LOL. mark.........

njflyguy, RW here

I've stayed at the Rockland House about 5 or 6 times in the past 2 years. If I remember correctly, the cost with taxes tacked on for a single is about 56 or 58 bucks a night. I know I'm only off a couple bucks, but that's about right. I'm already booked and I'll be there the whole week. Cya in June.

Later, RW

Ed & Willow,

Just to clarify something (unless it changed since last year). The Reynolds House is a Bed & Breakfast. Adjoining it is the Hendricks Motel that is a line of about 10 separate motel rooms. It is owned by the same couple and the same ammenities are available for the motel guests. I don't recall the cost of a room though, and at least one room has an upstairs kitchen area.

Anyone know what's going on with the Antrim Lodge? It seems like it's on and off with the renovations.

Dennis,

Mark should be able to respond with more and better information then I'll provide. It looked, at least the last time I passed by it in December, that not much had been done at all. It's still a mess and I don't know the timetable for getting the work done.

Having said that, maybe you should consider a question about the Antrim Lodge a 'non-fly fishing' question and delete it. Or perhaps you might want to explain that the Antrim Lodge is a fly fishing historical landmark. Thus the fly fishing connection.

Mayfly,

If you have historical data on the Antrim Lodge, it would be welcomed with open arms, the grandiloquent language is not.

Dennis

'grandiloquent" Dennis you have outdone yourself. What the hell does that mean? Allen behave yourself. the rate for the motel part of the Reynold's house is about $60.00. I always stay there so I am close to those sunoco cheeseburgers.

gran·dil·o·quence n. Pompous or bombastic speech or expression.

Now Mayfly & Dennis, you boys play nice or we're turning the car around right now...

Just trying to help... ;)

Hey Mark, did you get my e-mail?

Boy, aren't we testie........lol. I think Dennis is just being protective of his baby, like any good father would be. The thing is, he doesn't actually know some of us personally that well, and yet others he does. He cares, that's all. He's a very good person. Last night he busted me........LMAO. He was a bit mistaken with something i had written and thought it was aimed at someone in particular, which it wasn't. I PM'd him back and now everything is cool. So lets just all get along. We all adults. Maybe cabin fever is starting to kick in. LOL..........Ok,let's see. First of all, there is no more Hendricks Motel. Des and Carmel have been calling the entire establishment the Reynolds House for a while now. The rooms in the house vary in price according to the size of the bed(s). I believe they go from $65 to $95 amd in the house you get a full breakfast. Out back in the (what was Hendrickx back in the days) motel, the rooms are $60 and you get a continental breakfast. There are two rooms out back that have kitchens in them. Obviously they cost more. Main deal is that the whole place is the cleanest, nicest, and run by the best folks. Don't misunderstand, Tommy at the Rockland House is cool, Ken at the Baxter House is cool. But the Reynolds House is THE most convieniant and nicest place. They have a room out back for fly tying, they have a library with fly fishing books, etc., etc. Dig? As far as the Antrim is concerned, i know the lady only having met her a few times, and she is still looking for investors. The word was she had found them, then lost them, then found them again. She swore she would be open even if under a tent to serve food out on the lawn, for THIS opening day. That isn't going to happen. Now she says next years (2005) opening day. "Time Will Tell".... great tune by Bobby Watson by the way. Scott, haven't checked my email yet. Thought this was more important. Will do soon. mark

Mark,

Thanks for clearing up the Reynold's piece. Let me add one more thing about it thing that I really appreciate. They allow dogs! In fact, they were going to renovate 1 or 2 tiny (maybe 4'x4') rooms with outside link chain walls to use for kennels. Don't know if they did or didn't. Anyway, Des & Carmel are very nice and very accomodating.

As far as the Antrim, even next (2005) year looks like an overly optimistic and agressive schedule. I hope it gets done though. The walls that are there now could tell a ton of great stories.

Allan, you think i should drop over and ask Dez if he ever got that together? I mean i go by there every single day almost. Anyway, i sure hope the Antrim, opens again myself. Roscoe sure could use an alternative to the Dinner, R.H., Reymondo's, and that other joint on the corner for diner. You notice i didn't even mention that joint in the middle of the block in town. Any place don't take credit cards aint worth mentioning. LOL. I don't think Spiros ever got a liquor license? And the guy who owns the Fairway is a turkey. Let's hope the Antrim can get open SOON! mark..........;)

Gathering 2004

Mark, I don't know if I'm going to be able to make it this year. My mom hasn't made any steps towards making reservations and I've been asking her about it and she keeps saying she needs to find out from work blah blah blah. By the way you talk about it, there's probably no more room anyway. If I was coming up for the Gathering it would only be for Memorial Day weekend because I have school, but it doesn't look like its even gonna be that :( - Dan

Well Dan, i was over at the Reynolds House today and he has already got the place booked for the weekend of the 4th and 5th. He still has a few rooms before and after that. But it's over the 6th. Although folks are free and welcome to stay as long as they like after that of course. Like i been trying to impress on all of you for months already.........if you snooze, you loose. Not that you still can't get a place to stay.........but it won't be long now and you'll all be flat outta luck. Dan, get her to call the Rockland House, NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! mark

Dan, it starts on May 31st. but you can come early and i'll try to be ready to take you fishing. Should be just fine. Call the Reynolds House TODAY! And then the Rockland House if the Reynolds House is full up. mark.......

Roscoe Fish-In/Gathering

I just want everyone who has been asking me to know that I will be attending the Roscoe Fish-in/Gathering from May 31, 2004 - June 6, 2004. I already have my reservations made at the Reynolds house. I took one of the cottage rooms for a little more privacy for fly tying and to write my daily fishing diary for that week. Now for any one like Monty, RW and so on who want to fish with me, send me an E-mail to DoCaFish@comcast.net. During the fish-in, I will be demonstrating how to tye Wet fly's. I will be fishing wet fly's and classic streamers during this week. Can't wait to see everyone.

Andy B

P.S. Now that my move and daughters engagement party is over, I finally am getting back all the time that needed to be spent else where. Now it's time to think Catskill and PA Trout fishing.

it won't be long now

VERY cool Andy, i see you are one of the lucky few who got in at the Reynolds House before they booked up. Smart. They're full as we speak for that week already. Folks the Rockland House still has a few rooms...........you better JUMP NOW!!!!!!! If your to late there, try the Baxter House, the Roscoe Motel, the Red Rose, the Riverside Motel (great food), Creekside Cabins (very nice place) or any of the campgrounds. If your to late with any of those, let me know and i might be able to arrange for you to camp on my property. LOL. Andy, we still haven't pinned down where we will tye in the eves. yet. Last year of course it was at my house, and we had about a dozen or more tyers each eve. This year it looks like there will be even more tyers so we're gonna need a bigger space. I have already arranged for a space at the Reynolds House but it only holds about 10 guys.........so, for a limited class (that you might wanna teach) that would be ok. But, for an everyone included space we need the Red Rose or the Rockland House to step up to the plate. I'm still working on that. Ok folks, you better get crackin' with those reservations. Don't forget the Neversink River Day on Thur. that week, June 3rd, and the One Fly Pattern Contest on Fri. June 4th, and the Big Diner (with prizes) at the Rockland House on Sat. night June 5th. And anyone wanting a really nice place to stay with great fishing right on the property, do call the Creekside Cabins right at Hazel Bridge on old Rt. 17 between Livingston Manor and Roscoe.....a bit closer to Roscoe. I know of a 17 inch wild Brook Trout caught right behind the cabins. And some cabins have cooking facilities. Good luck, mark....:D

Mark, et al,

I'm hoping to have a fly tying contest and 1 or 2 casting contests during the Gathering. More information to be posted before that week.

Allan

I won't be able to spend the whole week but I mite be able to hit the gathering on the weekends that fall in that time period. I was pretty much disabled because of my shoulder surgery this past winter and I could'nt work. Anyway I'd like to attend but the whole week is out of the question for me. I allways have a place to stay when I'm in the Catskills, so thats not a problem but I could use some suggestions about events that will be happening on the weekend during The Gathering.:D J.Collins

the "gathering"

Hi John, well i sure hope you can make it both the weekend before and the weekend during. There are events both on the Thurs. and Fri. during.........i'm not to sure what Mayfly (Allan Podell) has planned for the weekend. I DO know one thing. He IS the "special guest tyer" at the CFFC&M on that Sat., June 5th. Most likely, any tying contest he may be referring to, would take place in the eve. I doubt anyone will want to sacrifice fishing time for a tying contest during the day. Especially that time of year. Other than that we have a farewell diner planed for Sat. night at the Rockland House on June 5th. Same as last year. We'll have door prizes and things ........hopefully prizes for the winners of any contest we have, like the One Fly Pattern Contest on Fri. June 5th. Stay tunned. mark.......
